Aux connection and adjacent power socket question.
I've dug out a Nokia MD 310 Wireless Music Receiver ( came free with SWMBO's phone years ago and never been used ) and picked up a USB to stupidly-small-Nokia-power-plug adapter from Fleabay for a couple of quid.
works quite nicely for playing music on phone through the car system.
However, it's not the smallest of devices ... roughly 60mm diameter and 25mm thick ... and I'd like to mount it somewhere where it's not going to get knocked. Also, when plugged into the Aux socket, the plug/cable is vulnerable to being knocked.
looking at the panel aux and power sockets are in, has anyone ever recessed it to make it less vulnerable ? is there enough space behind it ? or am I better off moving the aux socket elsewhere ?.

I'd have to use a short 90 degree plug to socket for aux and the front USB options are generally taken already, so I think I'll have a play with getting the panel out and recessing it.

Watching this - my aux socket is a bit dodgy and probably needs replacing - but I haven't figured out how to remove the console. Let us know how removal goes please!
I've done a similar thing - with a tiny BT receiver coming out the power socket at right-angles and a short aux cable into the aux-in socket. However it still protudes too much to put the flap down - which is bound to snap off the next time someone tries sliding across the rear seats.
Is there enough power to the cubby lid USB to supply the adapter? This assumes you have one there. You might be able to route a USB cable from there.

Whilst the units are hellishly expensive, at least the video shows you how to pull the console out!!

I would imagine there's enough space to recess it my 20mm at least, from memory. If your doing it, it'd be worth taking the cubby / fridge out as it will give you access to the back as well.
Removal of the centre console oy takes 5 minutes, powerfuluk have a video too.

The Nokia adapter supports NFC so to pair it, I can just tap the phone on top of it. And anyone else in the car can too, so it's worth having it easily accessible.
Potentially, the Nokia can then go in one of the front cupholders ( so where will all the old receipts and parking tickets go ? )
but I'll still be looking to recess the aux connector.

you can tap into the aux elsewhere - the passenger footwell is easiest and then add a cable behind the trim up to come out behind the cup holder or wire to a plug there if you want to plug a cable in and out. If you plug in elsewhere though the rear Aux needs a connector in it to sort the sound properly from memory, or the level is very low.Must stop buying shiny toys....

Can you show where you tap in under the passenger footwell?
I did a mod on my SA D3 from the rear aux, behind the facia, and quite correct, the volume needs to be twice as high when streaming music from the iPhone.2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey (UK)

when you take off the passenger side trim panel in the footwell the leads for the Aux feed are in the bundle cant remember the colour combo but they are the same through to the Aux in the rear so just pop it off and check on the back of the Aux connector. -that whole panel pulls out with the cig lighter and Aux so its easy to get off. From memory you sort of rock it bottom to top whilst depressing the spring clips by pushing slightly and pulling from the top
Take a look at this video for how to get that out to check the wire colours-
I have one of these on my D3 and its really good as a replacement for the whole panel. 5 minutes and its done.Must stop buying shiny toys....

Forgot to add as its ages since I did it on my old D3 GS the wiring is still in the footwell even if your D3 doesnt have an aux connector which the low spec radio cd didnt have.Must stop buying shiny toys....

Funny u talking about adding an Aux in the base model, added one from the back of the radio by buying a plug in loom that has the Aux lead incorporated , then spent ages fitting the aux socket into my dashboard
