Accessing Turbo vanes? D3
Hi.
I`ve taken out the turbo on my LR D3, because of sticky vanes. I have cleaned it and it does move much smoother now, but there is still some sticking at fully closed. I have to use some force to start opening them.
Does anybody know how to access the vanes? On every youtube video i`ve seen there are 3 screws holding the vanes in place, but not on this one. Well, there might be screws under the moving ring, but i cant figure out how to remove the ring. 3 of the vanes will not open enough to let me lift out the ring. They are stopped by what very well might be the screws.
Any tips on this will be much appreciated:)

Try vinegar, just keep pouring it down the gap every so often and leave to work over night.Andrew

Hi Andrew
Hope u don’t mind me picking ur brains plse, would something like oven cleaner also work
Also wonder how successful it would be as have never seen anyone replace the cartridge around £150.00 , or variable nozzle ring around £90.00 , alas if that’s at all possible without the turbo having to be sent away for calibration
Have read that a new actuator can’t be replaced unless it’s been set up by a specialist
Sorry I’m waffling again
Many thks

Oven cleaner should work but dont get it on any aluminimum.
I beleive with these turbos you have to fully close the vanes and then lift out the hole unit, the vane unit is all stanless steel and doesnt normally suffer with it sticking internaly so i dont think you need a new unit. The carbon normally builds up on the turbo housing and can be cleaned up with a rotary wire brush.
I havent strpped one of these turbos but have done lots of VAG ones, they also suffer with the turbo housing rusting and putting pressure on the control ring but 5mins with a dremmel sorts that out.Andrew

Many thanks
Wonder if an ultrasonic cleaner would work
Know when I first got mine the external actuator was badly stuck , after using a whole can of ceramic grease helped to free it up, along with adding a software patch that moved the actuator back and forth every time the ign was turned on/ off, didn’t realise mine didn’t have it
Still had limp mode but then noticed the horizontal hose clip was broke, replaced and resolved it luckily
Fingers crossed will be an easy fix for the OP
Thks again

Thanks, that does help. I`m guessing it means that the unit is just hammered down in the housing. It`s probably stuck there now Rolling Eyes

Hi
Glad it helped , always a team effort , wonder if an ultrasonic cleaner may be a solution , plus wonder if u do remove the ring if a new ring is required , alas not sure if it’s pressed in ??
Alas haven’t got any experience with the ultrasonic cleaners , just an idea and always handy for other items , assuming it would break down all the carbon , getting into all the nooks , saving time and allowing it to throughly clean everything without disassembly
Just a thought , Plse let us know how things go

@gstuart,
Might be a solution... but do you have any idea what size ultrasonic bath you need for a LR turbo, to be submerged? It will be more expensive to buy one in sufficient size than a brand new turbo..
Bearing Cassette and vanes can be bought new though.... these are allready balanced...Best regards
