2.7 v6 crank faliure
I have had my disco 3 just couple of months now. Engine has been faultless....until this morning. Flicked the key and my spidee senses tingled as engine didnt sound "normal" so checked her over and levels were on the money nothing loose. Started her up again and could still hear something.. then up the road that gut curdling low down engine knock started to growl at me. Im told its defo the bottom end and could be terminal. However doing a spot of research, i have seen several posts saying landrover have identified that some of the engines have been poorly fitted with the shells and only now is it coming to light.. has anyone else heard this and have Landrover actually done anything about it?

Hi,
Has nothing to do with “poor” fitting of the shells….
The design is that fitment relies on tension…, tension goes with age, use, wear etc.
Type of use, Maintenance and oil pressure have a lot to do with is… oilpressure of these oilpumps is not very high and after 60k mls a lot of times reduced to a level that the wear on The shells is evident / clear to see… Another 40k miles further and they tend to spin sometimes, and if they do… end of life crankshaft and crankcases…
I had 3 engines apart, all the same “image” to be seen…… (the one with 120k mls had 50% more wear on 4 of the 8 main bearing shells than the one with 68K mls……etc. my advice, change the oil pump every 80K miles, next to: very regular oil changes, with quality brand oil, A brand filter (mahle) are your best chances to keep it alive…

Use the search option and you will find a lot, and i mean a lot info regarding spun bearings..Best regards

I had 4 engines apart so far,
two oft hem with snapped cranks, and two of them with spun bearings.
I was able to fix two of them, one spun threw a rod and made some verry nice museal pieces for my desk. The other was one of the snapped crank parties, the crank snapped at a position where the rest wasn’t supported that well, it ran cricket in the bearings and overheated and eventually spin them too -> Case gone.
These engines suffer from bad problems regarding that.
My honest advice:
Keep up with good oil, keep the intervals short, and treat it well, regarding snapping shafts,.. well there’s nothing you can do about it.
And one last essential wisdom I had to buy myself: When rebuilding one of those things, don’t ever buy kits from Apex of ebay or Amazon, they are the cheapest imaginable junk, balanced and machined like a banana or a cucumber.
I bought mine from island 4x4, king shells and the other needed stuff

Thanks for the info guys. Its going the the garage for its diags in the morning. Getting it trailer'd. Havent got much choice than to dig deeper and have the work done. Will get a new pump and cam belt done at same time. Hoping that ive saved it in time to not have caused alot of damage. Fingers crossed.

Hi Sharky, sorry to hear about your crank failure, I’ve had it happen to me
On my previous D3.
I have an engine available here, 93k miles with full service history (paperwork included with engine).
If you’d like more info, let me know.

a good and sound runner @93K mls is a goodstarting point imho, but count in a set of at least NEW mainbearing shells and a fresh new oil pump, see my post above..
a rather small and easy job if you have the engine out (and body off) anyway.. Best regards

Motolab,
If I were fitting it in my car, I’d do main and Conrod bearings, oil pump and belts. Possibly water pump too.
The sump has to come off for the jag to LR change so it’s a good chance to inspect the crank and change if needed.
