Are theses the same as previous D4?

Ie: can I just buy the part, fit it myself and ask a dealer to activate it?

Should I fit the older style two plug type or the new 13pin to future proof.

I don't actually tow I use it for a bike rack which has the old style plug but wondered if they will soon be obsolete?
