13 Pin Trailer Socket
Where can I find fitting instruction for a 13 pin trailer electrical socket. In particular the location of where it plugs into the D4 including the purpose and colour of the wires?

All plugs in behind the removable cover on the left hand side of the boot (as you look in), wouldn't you much rather just buy a plug and play kit from someone like AF?... will save you hours of messing around and cutting wires etc... just plugs straight into the connectors already there...
This is from 2014 D4 but all D4 are essentially the same for this.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Not to hi jack the thread, but I've got 7n 7s sockets on mine and want to swap to a 13 pin. Can I just buy a 13 pin socket and wire it up using the wires that currently go in to 7n and s sockets without any issues or is there a different kit i can buy to convert from 7n&s to 13pin without buying a kit which has most of the bits i've probably already got?
Hope that makes sense

The 13 pin part of the loom is significantly more than buying a decent 13 pin socket and re-wiring, but it maintains the fully waterproof/encapsulated nature of the socket wiring.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Hi Martin
When I look at the wire colours coming out of Cable 'H' on your first link the colours do not agree with those above.
There are 3 plugs:
1 plug has:
Yellow
White
Green
1 plug has:
Brown
Blue
Red
Black
1 plug has:
White
Red/White
Red/White (yes two the same)
Yellow /Brown
Blue/Pink
I was wanting to tap into:
Live = Orange on Pin 9
IGN = Grey on Pin 10
but neither of these colours are there.
Any ideas

nigethecat’s diagram is generic 13 pin diagram not LR or D4 specific. I uploaded the D4 diagram for you with the correct colours.
Look at the D4 wiring diagram, to the column of pin/socket connections just to the left of the two boxes on the right (these boxes represent the 12N+12S sockets, the 13 pin is just a combination of them).
Connector with Yellow/White/Green is C1414A
Connector with Brown/Blue/Red/Black is C1415A
Connector with other colours is C1416A
The socket pins are even labelled in the tow socket boxes so you can find:
Permanent 12V as Blue+Pink
Ignition 12V as Red+White06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Great explanation Martin, thank you very much. Just need to determine why there are two wires in the same plug that are red/white and which one (or both) is IGN.

Just checked....your correct on the car side socket where the loom plugs into. However on the loom plug there is a predominantly red wire with a thin white stripe and a predominantly white wire with a thin red stripe. It looks as if the predominantly white with a thin red stripe is connected/opposite to one of the two white wires on the socket side.
