Almost there121 viewsAlmost at the top and still scrambling to keep momentum to reach the top of this awkward dune. The tussock grass mounds can be seen in the foreground and on the plain below and almost always made it difficult to maintain all 4 wheels in contact with the ground at the same time as keeping sufficient momentum to reach the top. Challenging all the way!29 Nov 2008
|
|
Flat out!79 viewsThis ascent was really soft and required full out power of the V8 to get up. At one stage the car was sliding sideways towards the camera nose directly up the slope with 4 sizeable rooster tails of flying sand. Not what the books tell you, but momentum has to be gained and maintained from the bottom all the way up.29 Nov 2008

Not a pretty picture93 viewsWell, there had to be one of the beaming owner in the album somewhere.29 Nov 2008

Brits and their tea!106 viewsWhenever there's a problem to solve - put the kettle on. After running out of fuel, 18km from the nearest balcktop and fuel station, 3 of the team's cars waited for the return of the other two with fuel. What does one do at times like these? Have a nice tidy up inside, dust off the sand and put the kettle on for a cuppa tea.29 Nov 2008

Pause for thought109 viewsAlways worth a look at the terrain ahead to establish the best route to use to make the ascent. Frequently the direct route is the worst, but the tussock grass and mounds on the plains below the dunes almost always prevented sufficient momentum to be gained for an easy ascent. Raw power and gritted teeth were often required to make the top on the 1st attempt.29 Nov 2008

The team photo104 viewsTaken at the finish point - just 60 km from the nearest blacktop road! A Challenge indeed, especially as at this point fuel in 3 cars was close to the red line with 20 litres of reserve between all 5 cars!29 Nov 2008

DiscoDancers Desert crossing89 viewsThe team consisted of two LR3 V8s, a Disco II V8, and two Nissan Patrol Safaris. 168 km of dune crossings over 2 days with a camp overnight mid-way. Awesome! 29 Nov 2008

Dune Descent92 viewsNo picture seems to do sand dunes justice in terms of their scale and beauty. This was a 100 metre dune (according to the GPS track profile anyway)in the driest, softest sand that behaved like a liquid as you descend the slope. Low 1st, DSC and HDC off and feathering the throttle was the technique used and the descent happens under full control. 29 Nov 2008

The start of a 2 day adventure109 viewsOverall, car performed really well in all desert conditions, but doesn't do so well on side slopes or full on straight and soft dune climbs. Find an easier approach with plenty of power on and she'll climb the sandy equivalent of Everest!29 Nov 2008
|
|
Over the sands97 viewsInitially tried the car with all up weight - full auxiliary (115L)and main (85L) fuel tanks, dual spare wheels, and roof rack. Car had a marked tendency to tail end slide when on side slopes, especially in soft - really soft sand. 29 Nov 2008

View the Nissans saw106 viewsRecovery strap pre-shackled to the rear recovery eye and secured with a bungey strap to the rear door ladder saves a lot of time when running against the clock - and having to recover a bogged in Nissan!29 Nov 2008

Spread the laod133 viewsEncouraged that the load on the jack still doesn\'t cause any sink in, even in soft sand, with most of the weight of the car on it due to the side slope.09 Aug 2008

Success in the sands128 viewsAir jack almost fully inflated, suspension in extended mode on soft sand, sloping towards the camera.09 Aug 2008

|
Off the ground143 viewsCar is on a desert sand sideslipe towards the camera - worst combination I could think of. Fully inflated, jack lifts the rear off by about 25mm, with suspension in extended mode.09 Aug 2008

LRs stick together129 viewsA date plantation alongside a wadi in the Western Hajar mountains of Oman. My mate\'s Disco 2 in company. Cracking drive on this day some 100km off-raod through wadis and mountain graded roads. Sheer, unadulterated pleasure.09 Aug 2008

Even in Oman they have water splashes!104 viewsThe sheer joy of driving through fresh water in a mountain wadi. Rare enough to find running water when it isn\'t raining, but to drive through too is a real bonus for us Middle Eastern ex-pat drivers!09 Aug 2008

Sunset on Mazirah100 viewsOur camp site for the night - nothing but us, sand and green turtles. Fabulous view out over the Arabian Gulf, blue skies, blue seas and isolation. Almost paradise.09 Aug 2008

All at sea in an LR3105 viewsThe ferry from the mainland to Mazira Island was packed to the gunnels with vehicles. My LR3 was last on and they left the bow doors partially open for 14 lonnnnng sea miles across the Arabian Gulf!09 Aug 2008

LongRanger auxiliary fuel tank357 viewsThe LR fuel tank imported from ARB in Australia with its 115 litre capacity has more than doubled the range of the car. This is important in the desert where fuel consumption increases at times to 10mpg or less. On a cruise on highways, the car now has a range approaching 850 miles. The tank fits neatly, has not affected handling in a detectable way apart from over speed humps, when a little more bounce from the rear suspension is detected! Suspension copes with the additonal loads without any problem.08 Aug 2008

|
2009 MY?239 viewsThe wheelarches, door sills, and door mirror bodies have all been sprayed to match the body colour. Same as 2009 MY? I think this looks really good, and is so much easier to keep clean than the textured plastic that suffered badly out here from dust/dirt ingraining and UV discolouration.08 Aug 2008

Long Ranger auxilairy fuel tank pump switch and tank gauge308 viewsFitted to the right of the air vent thumbwheel, the neat combination switch and gauge take sup no room at all. Switch locks on or off, but no pump running warning lamp! Contents of the tank are indicated by 5 LEDS, 4 green and 1 red for full, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 and empty. Pump transfer rate of just 2 litres p/min is disappointing. I transfer on the move when main tank is at 1/4.08 Aug 2008

TracTronics loadspace power socket 382 viewsThe 2nd power socket fitted alongside the original in the loadspace runs off the auxiliary Optima Bluetop battery to run a fridge when engine is not running. No more starting worries!08 Aug 2008

LR towing electrics pack 12N/12S313 viewsThe LR trailer electrics fitted before the Kaymar bumper and spare wheel carriers required no modifications are perfectly accessible. Good strong recovery point between the sockets too. The swing awau wheel carrier securing latches can be seen quite clearly here. Long Ranger tank (painted black) nestles where orignal spare was fitted.08 Aug 2008

Auxiliary power sockets - TracTronics, Australia382 viewsA complete kit including two outlets, wiring etc connected to auxiliary Optima Blue top battery using their very effective SC40 split charge relay. One outlet between rear and front seats, and 2nd alongside loadspace 12v outlet, enables fridge to run when engine is not running, without affecting start capacity or vehicle functions. 08 Aug 2008

Escape seat covers rear254 viewsJust shwing the good fit of these canvas seat covers made in South Africa. The whole set for a 7 seat HSE £542 with air freight as unaccompanied baggage (inside 5 Front Runner Wolf pack boxes) costing and additional £150 - still a bargain out here!08 Aug 2008

Load space368 viewsShows the SA Front Runner Wolfpack stacking plastic storage boxes that I keep laod straps etc in and the 2nd is tool kit, spare belts, jerry can funnel and tools, plus airline and tyre inflator/deflaotr for ARB on-board compressor, HD jump leads. ARB Winch pack (Orange)with strops, snatch blocks, shackles, gloves, and 2 ARB recovery dampers. Really great 4x4 1st Aid kit from Outdoors warehouse in SA. LRs own loadspace guard - not the best design if you want to store a long load. Mods to be carried out!08 Aug 2008

Mud UK switch binnacle453 viewsToo many switches for the roof mounted console, so this binnacle from Mud UK (desigend for the Defender) is an almost perfect match for the leather finished dash in the LR3. Switches, connectors etc bought from them too. From L - R switch functions are:
LH side mounted rack lamps
Driving lamps rack mounted
Spot lamps rack mounted
Bumper mounted driving lamps
RH side mounted rack lamps
Warn winch isolator
Rear mounted rack lamps (reversing)
Telescopic work lamp (fitted behind RH spare wheel)

\'Escape\' canvas seat covers269 viewsFull set of these well made SA seat covers fitted to protect the Alpaca leather from constant exposure to Middle EAst sunlight and sand. They fit well, and to date have proved very durable. They include headrest and arm rest covers too.08 Aug 2008

RHS view371 viewsSHows the Front Runner (SA) slimline windcheetah rack which is immensely strong. Takes my 110kg (oh gawd, I must get back on the diet and exercise regime) tramping over it when loading/unloading gear without a problem. Fittings are simply fixed or removed, and IMO very well designed and made. IPF 800 series driving and spots fitted to the front of the rack. IPF cam/reversing fitted each side and to rear of rack for negotiating rocky wadis at night. The G4 stickers were bought off E-bay as a set.08 Aug 2008

Front end327 viewsARB deluxe winch bar is very well made. Still allows Mantec sump guard to be used. Warn M8000 winch fitted - (wish I could\'ve found an M15000!) and IPF 900XS Extreme Series mounted with light stays to grille. Fog lights work fine with the replacement bumper, and indicators in bumpoer are effective too.08 Aug 2008

Rear end open330 viewsEccentric latch clamps for wheel carriers are very strong. No rattles on graded roads. Canvas seat covers from \'Escape\' in SA on rear jump seats can be seen, and Front Runner Wolfpack storage boxes - great for toolkit, winch and recovery straps etc.08 Aug 2008
