ZF8 filter change?
Hi All,
I've searched but couldn't find an answer...
With the ZF8 gearbox in the D4, is it worth changing the filter or just flushing? I've found a filter on the web for example https://www.lrparts.net/lr065238-automatic...y-4-5.html and was wondering if it's worth changing it or would a mega flush be just as good/better? I did a change of fluid following a guide on here a while back. I could do that again I suppose but just wondering what the best option is.
I've got no issues with my gearbox, but would like to do preventative maintenance wherever possible as I'm going to keep her FOREVER!!

Hi, that's what I did last time. Brilliant guide (as always by Robbie). Just wondering if a flush or swapping the filter would do anything more than following the guide again?

If you look at most std auto trans filters they are very crude affairs, and are really to keep large lumps out of the system.
So I would say if all is good, do not touch.
Google tells me auto trans filters are 100 to 200 microns, engine oil filter are low to mid 20 micorns, and common rail filters can filter as fine as 5 microns.

Right, I'll just do the oil changes then for now and maybe have a flush.
Cheers for the advice.

Having changed the filter, it was a pain, and the small amount "fur" retained by the magets was encouraging, as was the green, "fesh" smelling fluid. Was it needed at 98K miles? , in my case, I don't think so. Perhaps a filter change could depend on the state of the oil being drained.

Mine was fine when I swapped it and I'm now on 160k. I'll stick to swapping the fluid every 12 months for what little cost compared to the cost of a new gearbox.
