And yet no one spotted me (hopefully)

Happily motoring along on the Edinburgh bypass this morning and then thought the road behind me looks awful dusty, then realised it looked like whitish smoke, then saw greyish whitish smoke appearing from the nearside bonnet, managed to pull into a layby and lift the bonnet - thought the engine was on fire but just smoking heavily from the nearside of the engine bay.

after it cooled and the smoke dissipated, I could smell a strong smell of diesel and a nice puddle underneath for good measure, so only one thing for it

Recovered back to my preferred garage near Dumbarton, looks like a pipe to the injector has perished, but time will tell.
So for now its a Corsa for me Big Cry Big Cry

Eeeek. That could have gone a lot worse very quickly.
I did wonder what that smell was this morning...! I live close to the bypass.

Just a quick diagnosis this afternoon

Looks to be one of the spill off pipes from the rear injector has popped out.
Seems with the constant heating and cooling in that area they are prone to cracking

hopefully replaced tomorrow

I've heard of this on a few occasions locally with 10 year + D3's.

Is this something of which we should be aware & be replacing at a certain mileage/age?

I'm not sure but as soon as the motor was offloaded, Paul the garage owner had his head under the bonnet and went straight for the rear of the engine and discovered the pipe off, he did say that this is a common problem. So much so he was able to quote me the price of the part and how long it would take to replace

I will do

Now don't quote me on this yet but he did say the part was around £120 as its the whole side that needs replaced, I've carried out a search and suspect it may be this

Mick Flack replaced mine last year with a complete new loom as a one or 2 had perished and had started to leak, one quite badly. Be carful of the little clips that hold the leak off pipe in place on the injector as once they ping off they are lost forever Big Cry If you are doing the job yourself order the loom and 2 or 3 extra clips Thumbs Up

Alternatively tie a cotton thread to it and cut it when installed.

Same thing happened to me just recently. In my case on the motorway with cars keeping their distance! Fiddly time consuming job to change the leak off pipes. Be very very careful when you remove the injector leak off pipe clips. Also, when you go to refit the clips they will want to ping off into infinity. I advise you to buy 2 new clips off ebay now, and when you refit tie cotton still attached to reel around the clip and break off once refitted.
