WWII Flak

I stumbled upon these statistics showing the amount of ammunition the Germans expended per Allied aircraft shot down. Astonishing, but it does explain why ground-to-air missiles were designed! Presumably we were doing the same thing.

I bet it had a higher kill rate when used in the anti-tank role. The adaptation that was fitted to the Tiger 1 was certainly a fearsome thing for any Allied tank crews.

I read an interesting article about a statistician in WWII who worked on aircraft design.

He looked at the bullet holes suffered by planes returning after a sortie, and noted that very few of them had any damage around the engine and propeller. He suggested that the armour be strengthened in those areas. The designers were not happy - none of the returning planes had significant damage in those areas - why bother?

Because planes that were damaged in those areas didn't return.

An obvious point when you think about it - but not a connection I'd have made.

Yes, that's interesting. It's looking at it from the other side of the issue and something that I bet many of us wouldn't have spotted. Thumbs Up

Many years ago I was involved with work connected to the BBMF, (not in the airforce, it was an IT project via a charity) and in the course of this met a number of the aircrew who were on Lancs and other bombers during WWII I really dont think anyone can comprehend the terror there must have been to be on the receiving end of the flak, lose friends to it and then go back the next night into the jaws again!
 Must stop buying shiny toys....

Having sat in the pilot's seat of the BBMF Lancaster back when I was a teenager, I can't comprehend how kids (guys in their very early 20s) took them out night after night. It's a small aircraft, made from tin and string and nothing other than the pilot's seat back had a chance of a stopping a bullet. It makes me scared just thinking about it! Humbling.
