Wish list for a D3 newbie |
|
Wow! Am amazed at the site and the amount of info. Am living & working in Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman. Acquired my LHD 2005 model year V8 HSE last month. Sooooh much better than the Discos I'd had in the UK. Genuine parts/accessories from LR dealer are 100% more than retail prices in the UK. Have bought snorkel and towbar gear in UK, fetched out by co-operative mates, and now fitted.
Those of you with heavily modded D3s - christyler and the like - what would your advice be as a wish list for improvements for off-road work out here in gravel, rock and sand?
Have in mind front mounted winch, underbody protection and maybe the Matzker interactive suspension reviewed in LROI in Dec 2006. Long range tank might be an option, with rear swingaway spare carrier. Would like to have a rack for jerry cans and maybe a 2nd spare, which would also enable additional lighting. What do you do about chassis strong points for self-recovery with a winch? Sand anchors - anyone got any suggestions as to make?
Anyone got experience of shipping and importing gear into the Middle East? Am sure there'll be lots of opinions.
Cheers guys.

RHFFGB,
Was in your neck of the peninsular couple of weeks ago - seems you pay tax! We've got an ARB dealership which might stock some of the goodies you want.
Doc Diesel, thruppence a gallon? not quite. But with a stonking great V8 and double aircons going all the time it needs to be.

Yoh! A fellow sand beetle! Heard from my new boss (ex AD 4x4 club member) that there was someone there dealing with ARB gear. Do you have contact details and an address I can poke into Gloria, the GPS?
What kind of gear are you running with on yours?

Try this
http://www.arbemirates.com/
Like most places, there's rarely any prices indicated so you'll need to aim for 'best price for you my friend'.
Easy to find but call first to make sure they've got the stuff for you to look at.
BTW if the 'products' link doesn't work, try clicking on the 'inquiry' tab. Not sure why but it seems to sort out the glitch.

What kind of rock? In my area, we commonly are driving over soccer (football?) sized rocks or larger. To accommodate that, we have some heavy duty rock sliders available.

S'been a while since I've picked up this thread - sorry.
Rock - It's all hard and there's plenty of it! After rainfall in particular the wadis (dry riverbeds) can have anything from bus sized boulders to pebbles that need to be negotiated. 'Wadi-bashing' is a popular past-time here and as the translated Arabic sign says - 'Drownings are now popular'!
Would prefer to have a side rail that can be jacked with a hi-lift and save the precious and expensive plastic from rock scrapes, bangs and replacement.
Why do they fit plastic sills anyway? It's a Land Rover isn't it?
The gear on the website looks good. Any idea of shipping costs from the States to Muscat?

The shipping costs are just under $400 (USD) from our point of origin to the port of Muscat, Oman, where you would have to go to pick them up. The transit time is about 45 days. Due to the box dimensions (not weight), there is a flat fee for shipping that is the same whether we ship one set or two, so if you have a buddy (or your local LR dealer) that might also like a set, the cost to ship both remains $400, but you can share the cost between the two of you.
With the popular Stage II option, these sliders can definately handle using a Hi-Lift, and work excellent as stand off's when working through rocks.
Here is a downloadable PDF with more info:

Thanks NW. Do you have a similar product for the SeriesII Disco? I have a friend here that might just want the same kind of thing for his car. If so, we could share the shipping cost, as you say.

No I'm afraid we don't. We only make sliders for the Range Rover Sport and the Disco III. There are quite a few Disco II vendors who do provide nice sliders for that model. I will look around and link you to a few similar products. Check back tommorow.
