Wing Mirror Sticking - Motor buzzing
Okay so not the most descriptive title - but I think you get the gist.........
Boris, my 2011 D4 has developed an issue with the pass anger side door mirror, these fold in automatically when you lock the car and the passenger side one folds part way in and gets stuck, the motor is still going and if you push the mirror it is possible to get it to fold in and generally after a good wiggle the motor stops whirring!
Its currently at a local LR independent garage where I await the bad news - just called to check in and they are saying that potentially its a whole new unit - if this is the case its going to be fairly pricey!!
As the mirror folding in is not that essential - could I feasibly just get them to disconnect the motor as it seems quite elaborate to replace the whole unit when it is undamaged other than the actual inner workings (That I don't need anyway??)
Thanks in advance

Unfortunately not on my model, We did look into it and sadly it is a feature that is permanently on......
I think as its an early model that option was one of the improved features on later models

Independent garage has just called, apparently on my model it is not possible to replace the motor and the whole unit needs replacing, part quoted at £207 plus VAT plus fitting at potentially an hours labour (They think more like 30 mins)
Have asked if they can simply disconnect the power as I dont need the mirrors to fold in (serves absolutely no purpose for me) and they are going to go and find out.
Potential bill is £327.60
All for a chuffin' wing mirror!!!!

If the mirror is making a noise surely the motor has not died? I'm planning on taking mine to bits to see if its over travelled or something. I can get it to move if I gently help it with my hand.

Apparently its something to do with the fact that a lot of the parts are made of plastic and they fail, the motor works and makes a noise but isn't working efficiently enough to move the mirror.

As a temporary measure can you not let it close on the fob automatically, even if you help it, then pull the mirror open manually, that way then it won’t close automatically when you lock it

It's mechanical rather than electrical and if you could get to it's innards, you might well find the problem. I suppose it could be some plastic gears that have some teeth gone, or maybe just a build-up of crud over the years that makes it too hard for the motor to do it's job. If it's going to cost £330 for a new unit, then before taking that plunge I'd have a fiddle. What is there to lose? You can't make it more broken than broken.

My drivers side D3 mirror was sticking and I lubricated the hinge area with Silicone spray & its been OK for the last 6 months. As you say, you have nothing to lose in trying a repair.

Don’t buy a new mirror, if it’s a 2011 then the mirrors aren’t expensive and even replacing a motor and arm isn’t difficult. Keep an eye on eBay as I sold a pair of 2011 mirrors last year for £100 and they were mint. If you find one at a breakers on eBay, make an offer, ive found they generally accept offers of 10% less and occasionally when I’m being ballsy, 25% less.
It’s also only a 5 minute job to swop and you can DIY it with the window down with no fear of doing damage or self harm.
I don’t know why you can’t turn off power fold in the menu but I’m sure a CCF edit could.

If getting non LR motors be careful as they will open at a different speed than genuine LR mirrors.
