Windscreen Chip - AdmiralInsurance

Major chip on SWMBO's RRS this morning Big Cry

Too big, I suspect, to be repaired, though they are going to give it a go.

Contacted Admiral's glass people - National Windscreens - and told them I want LR OEM windscreen not an old aftermarket cr Censored p. They said it depends on whether the insurer will cover it.

Anyone know if Admiral will cover OEM glass or do I have a right to insist on it?

No and no.

Although to be fair, I have no complaints about the generic version I have now following replacement by National Windscreens on Admiral's behalf.

Landrover don't make the glass they just get there name stamped on it, why does everyone think that if it hasn't LR stamped on it then it's not for them.

I appreciate that LR don't actually make the glass, like most items. But a LR OEM product will have been made to LR standards, whereas an aftermarket one is made to someone else's, which might be just as good, there again it might not. I just don't want to take that chance if I don't have to.

I think you will find that they are all made to the standards applicable to the market where the vehicles are sold

Google "windscreen standards" for the info can't see Land Rover creating their own standards outside the scope of any international standards it wouldn't make sense

Yes I don't think LR determine the standard. Lets be honest here if that's the case I would be willing to try other parts as the amount of failed genuine LR part wouldn't be the lowest.

What I am trying to say is people get all wrapped up in the brand, and end up not seeing the woods for the trees.

Ok, going a bit Off Topic here (but as I'm the OP I guess that should be ok!), I'm not sure I totally agree with the above. Ok, so windscreens may not be the best example as the number of manufacturers is low and the opportunities for cost savings in manufacturing are limited. But take brake pads for example. Do we really think that all aftermarket products are as good as OEM?

Maybe my choice of the word 'standards' is misleading. What I was trying to say is that LR (or BMW, Mercedes, whoever) set the specifications of the product, which in this case includes a heating element, rain sensor and light sensor. So buying a LR branded product means that it will meet the same specification as that originally fitted.

An aftermarket product may be just as good (which by dint of the restricted supply is probably true in the case of windscreens) or it may not (which in the case of brake pads it often is emphatically not).

Take tyres as another example, if your insurance company were to provide a new set of cheap boots from China in replacement for your Pirellis, Goodyears etc. would you be happy? If they are for sale in the UK then they no doubt meet the 'standards'.

If they use the non LR ones (Pilkington) that Autoglass use don't worry about it, they are exactly the same except the LR badge. I've compared them side by side on 2 D3s and can't tell any difference.

But all academic, if your insurer says non LR you don't have much choice. Downside to "value" insurance.

How big is the chip? ISTR if it's in the swept area and can be covered by a 20p coin it can be repaired (apart from 10cm either side of a line through the centre of the steering wheel projected on to the screen).

Windscreen co. says its a 5p coin but I had forgotten about the position rule. Should pass the 5p test but I think it might fall foul of the steering wheel rule Sad
