Winching

Thought this was interesting , made me nervous when the guy was winching and went back

Sorry for a very daft question plse , but with terrain response saw the wheels kept spinning , isn’t the terrain response system supposed to stop the wheels that loose traction then send power to the one that isn’t spinning , or won’t that work if all of them are turning plse

Once again apologise for the daft question

Many thks

It lets them slip to a degree so that it can check if there is grip - if it brought a wheel to a complete stop it wouldn't know whether it could/had regain traction. The amount of slip that is allowed and the difference in slip between wheels depends on which program is selected. If all wheels are slipping but the car isn't moving, it's stuck!

Bless u and that makes a lot of sense , thank u

like a doughnut I thought the wheels need to be stopped but u saying that if they were the landy wouldnt know if they had grip or not , Also things like diff locks etc , know there’s a centre diff lock

Do see quite a lot of videos of people fitting lockers , so assume there very effective

Did make me nervous watching that winching when the landy went back giving the winch cable a twang

Thks again Bow down

That point about the wheels being stopped is where manually operated lockers come into their own, probably in all other scenarios the variable slip of the e locker or the transfer case is pretty dammed good when combined with the terrain response

Terrain Response is great, providing you have the most appropriate setting selected before starting your drive through the obstacle.

While Sand mode makes you think of cresting massive dunes in the Sahara, it's actually very good for climbing steep hills on gravel and mud.

Turning off DSC also helps to allow the wheels to spin rather than sapping power from the engine. Spinning the wheels helps to clear the tread.

Using HDC when descending on black ice on tarmac is amazing, it's so controlled.

The main thing is to practice, so that you can recognise the terrain you're crossing and make the appropriate adjustments.

The latest range of Land Rover products have Auto TR which does this analysis for you from information gathered from the wheels, engine, suspension, gearbox and the outside environment.

Really looking forward when I’ll finally be able to get out on a greenlaning trip with others

Indeed, Will then be able to see how the landy responds in the various settings

You were right about being stuck ...if there is no traction then there is no traction, it's good but it's not a magic machine.

Turning off DSC will help but bear in mind it is never really 'off' and will take control again if the sensors go beyond those extended parameters.

HDC is not infallible ...if it's slippery enough you will hurtle down a slope and may not recover, particularly if there is little run out available further down.

Talking of grip, still shocks me when u see a 4x4 going down a snow filled motorway at stupid speeds , assume it gives them a false sense of security they won’t slide out of control

Never forget sliding round a corner doing low speed on snow in my series 3 , ended up in a field , must have only been in my 20’s and couldn’t do anything regardless of which way I turned the steering wheel

Taught me real fast back then to respect winter conditions
