Winch Choice for the hidden mount
Can anyone using a hidden winch mount (courtesy of Uncle Ray or other sources) tell me what type of winch they have fitted please? Not sure what to go for by way of type/size. Not asking about load rating, more the actual dimensions etc.

Any of the low profile frames should be OK - i.e. those which have a remoe solenoid pack (or one that can be adapted to make it remote) the mounting hole pitch seems to be common across most manufacturers

An issue to be aware of is that some of the beefier winches (like the Warn 12000) require a feet-forward mounting position (still 10" x 4.5") that will not fit in a hidden winch tray. Also, many times the bodies of the winch are substantially larger than the mounting bolt footprint.
I found this out the hard way. BTW, anyone want to pickup (in US) a new Warn 12000 on discount?
Also, with some winches the end casing for the clutch arm can be unbolted, rotated 1 or 2 bolt positions & rebolted. That way the clutch control arm can be repositioned for better access or clearance in a tray.

Decided to try one of these as I know it will fit (cheers Wiggs)
Sure it is no Warn but at the price it is a real bargain. For the amount of times I will use it it's worth a gamble and can be replaced by a better one if it isn't up to the mark.
He has plenty more at a B.I.N. price of £835 so reckon I got a deal 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

There all much the same ..the only thing i noticed when i got one was the gear ratio...i got 187,2 : 1 high speed ...a lot of the others are 265:1 ...mainly a speed thing , but the warn one that LR fit as standard is close'est to 187,2 : 1.G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

NB I checked on a few other forums regarding these - they are made in China (what isn't these days.. )
some of the 'purists' say they're cheap and nasty but who knows? For the price they seem worth a try.
Someone also suggested looking at http://www.winchsolutions.co.uk/index.html but don't take the web site price phone them for a deal ! HTH

I am not expecting the winch to be great for the price but I will give it a go. Most times when I have needed a winch it has been for a bit of help up a slippery or rocky slope or step and the winch hasn't had to do much. If it is crap I will re-sell it on eBay and buy a better one. Still down to price though, a decent branded winch with radio remote control will set me back around £700-£800 so at around £220 it is worth a punt.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto
