Whine in drive-train : disappears with releasing throttle
I can hear a whine in the drivetrain, swelling from about 50MPH to 75MPH in volume. Let go of the throttle and the sound is gone. It comes from an area stretching from just below the control of the automatic gearbox, upto the rear axle. So basicly anywhere in the driving of the rear wheels I'm afraid. I can 't find anything in the forum with just keywords. The fact that I'm from the Netherlands and not well known with the specific terms for noises, doesn't really help with searching. My car did 167000Km's sofar; anything known to break in the drivetrain at this mileage [100K...] ?

Thats something to start with.. Any change on a tip how to recover the tread? Called the stealer btw and asked him 'could it be the dif' he said ; we can check by putting different oil in it... To me this sounds like a trick they used to do with wrecked gearboxes : put some dense & sticky stuff in it to mask the problem... So 'other oil' is not a cure I guess

I've had both diffs changed but my symptoms where the reverse of Dans i.e the whine appeared when coming off the throttle.Club Exped trailer

Combining my problem & Ent's... a bearing 'out-of-line' ? I dunno about which part in the whole drivetrain has to be 100% aligned, but maybe the bearing supporting the propshaft into the rearaxle diff??? I have no clue if that
bearing can compensate for alignment...

They use sound sensors on the diff at my local dealer. Mine was with the throttle on and it stopped when you lifted off throttle.

Yes it is definitely the diff's. A high pitched whine at faster speeds indicates front diff problems. When you said that if you lift your foor off the accelerator the whine dissapears, it definitely indicates front diff problems.
A lower pitched almost a growl sound indicates rear diff problems.
A good gearbox and diff place should be able to tell you straight away what to do. Ask one of the guys there to drive for a bit, and he should be able to tell you.

Agree it's the diff, although mine sounded as Ents, ie noise off throttle

I recommend Centurion Gearbox and Diff,(012 653 8941) the guy there is Ferdi, he is contracted to build diff's for LR SA, he will be able to help you with everything.
