Which wheels/tyres

I have a choice of 17" rims to buy.......one set has Conti Contacts on, the other has Wranglers ........ both will be the same cost

Which is recommended, and should I be looking at new 17" rims for my SE in the first place (ie..is it a good idea or not?)

Thanks for help again

Are you sticking with the rubber on them or going to replace with ST/STT's or similar?

If you're going to stick with the rubber, go for the contis. Why you'd want 17s on an SE for onroad use is beyond me, as they are not the prettiest wheel and your onroad ride will be bouncier than the 18s, more akin to the 18s with AT2s on.

Personally I'd only get 17" rims if I wanted to get a mud tyre. 18s with AT2s are excellent all-rounders for road, stony or sandy surfaces, although I know I will be getting well and truly stuck in the gloopy Devon loam/clay on Sunday where STTs or MTRs would be my saviour.

At some point next year I will probably get some 17s and some STTs, assuming a) I still have the car and b) nobody comes out with an 18" mud tyre by then

Totally agree with ND.
Get you 18's refurbished [whilst running on the 17's].
Then stick some STT's on the 17's.
Sell the 17' tyres as nearly new [here or on the RRS site]

My STT shod 17's have just arrived 5 min ago. Mr. Green
Just going to unwrap, caress, then hide them away [in my unit] from SWMBO

Then going to fit and go to Lakes in a week, then playday at Tong Very Happy

mxgeldar7 I run 17"ers with contis on a D3 S Auto and prefer them to the 18" scorps. They (IMHO) give a better ride (less vagueness and less harsh over bumps) and will be getting 23k from a set. Have used them greenlaning and they are great at that, some minor cuts from rocks but nothing needing replaced (already had to replace 2 x MTRs). Additionally they are cheap as chips as folks get 17" wheels to put STs & STTs on, you can pick up a set of unused tyres for a good price. Alternatively once you need your second set of tyres buy new wheels & tyres & flog off the old wheels for someone to put STTs on. As for the looks, I think they look Thumbs Up but I might be biased.

This sounds very familiar! I had exactly the same choice to make when collecting from an ebay trader. As both Continental and Goodyear are premium brands I didn't expect there to be much difference. I went for Goodyear as a change from the original Contis. Once fitted you would never know they were different.
