Where's my FBH smoke & smell ?

Yesterday was -2 degrees when I went out and for the first time I had to de-ice the D4.
I also fitted my bike rack & mountain bike for a ride in the moors [in my shorts Rolling Eyes ] - we're hard stuff oop north Wink
As I was doing this, I let the engine run, but it just dawned on me as I was driving off that I didn't get the usual FBH smoke and smell [like wot I used to get on my D3], in fact I don't recall ever having the FBH smoke or smell on the D4

Anyway, this morning, another -2 and I had the bonnet up to check the FBH operation.
Everything fired up well, the fbh whirred into life, the exhaust got hot with a stream of hot gas exiting the outlet pipe ....... but, No Smoke & No Smell.
Why is that ?

Has anyone else with a D4 been short changed in this area.

-8c here this morning, fired her up to de-ice her and only a faint whiff from the FBH and very little smoke. Maybe they've gone all Eco? Whistle

Bought car 6 weeks ago and have just had mine reset as it had been locked out so never worked since my ownership

The smoke covered McDonald's drive through nicely after FLACK and his fault mate sorted it out

Quick question...how do you get it to defrost the windows and warm the interior of the car, or is this an option or is this standard when it fires up?
Do I need to leave heater settings in autoetc
Cheers

I don't think you can get the interior, seats, etc running, it's just firing up the FBH remotely via GSM. I think.

Mind you I did the previous 2 winters with no FBH & it didn't make any difference.

I don't bother with the de-iceing, just switch the FBH on remotely 1/2 hour before I need to go out, when I get to the car all the ice has melted and the car interior is warm Very Happy - I'm glad I had the heated steering wheel too - it doesn't take long to warm up either.

The FBH will use all initially generated heat to heat up the engine [& not cabin].
Once the engine is warmed sufficiently it'll then pass heat through to the cabin .......
..... well that's my understanding.

Hi guys,

Would love to understand this thing about the FBH!
I just installed the remote controller and (I thought) it works a beauty.

First time I switched it on, I got some smoke, but that's about it.
Now all I get is some noise (sounds like a small turbine whine) and some smell.
Basically no smoke at all!

.....but I seem to get all the heat, as it's supposed to be!
After 30min, engine temp is up 1/3 - 1/2 scale

So until I read this post, I never worried about it, to me it was doing exactly what is said on the tin!
Until I read this tin, which seems to have smoke as one of its ingredients.

Can somebody try to clarify this, please?

It will only smoke if there is unburnt fuel. If your s is working fine and the temperature is OK, then that is all fine.

It WILL smoke if I purge the FBH with a faultmate.

The more it's used, the less it will smoke Thumbs Up

Good Morning all,

This morning I almost thought my 2009 D4 was on fire, reading this thread I wondered if this might be my issue.

I stayed at a hotel last night and this morning started the car to move it from the car park to another a short distance away. The engine was running for approx 3 or 4 minutes and I drove about 200 yards. I switched off and locked up only to then see a heavy diesel type smoke coming from underneath, front n/s corner.

Lifted the bonnet and traced the source of the smoke to a fan heater type assembly which was still running. Not long after the smoke stopped.

Is this abnormal or should I stop worrying.

ps, sorry to hijack the thread.
