when's an oil leak an oil sweat?

This is a pic of the output shaft into front diff

I have done 40000 kms in just over 1 year in this 2006 hse tdv6 and apart from a split cv boot and creeping lazy entry drivers seat have enjoyed permagrin. Dealer has been good so far but I was surpised when he assessed the above shown leak as normal 'sweating'. I have wiped the area clean several times and within a few hundred kms the same amount of 'sweat' returns. What do other people reckon? My plan is not to touch it and wait and see if a fully formed drip forms (which sort of happens now) and then return at that time? Thanks for all the great ideas and views on this forum

My rear diff was leaking a similar amount. Dealer replaced the whole thing under warranty with no questions asked. There was a bit of a delay as they were trying to just replace the oil seal, but LR got them to change the whole diff instead.

bkehoe,
You don't indictae of this is on top or bottom of the shaft.
If its at the top, I would look a bit further afield. Possable the leak maybe engine oil from somewhere above this point.
If at the bottom, it may still be a leak from abaove that is following the curve of the housing to appear as a leak from the housing.
But what's a Landy without an oil leak???....A Toyota.... Smile

the shot is taken from underneath the car so leak appearing at the bottom of the housing. Oil very clean, doesn't have an engine oil feel
Old land rovers you expect to leak but at this early stage of it's life!! Shocked

Landy motors are not run in until they have leaked 8 litres of oil. Shocked

Well if it's any help, my 3 series Beemer diff started weeping a bit, like this at 45000 miles, then got worse (as in dripping oil onto drive) over the next 20,000 m, at which point I replaced the seal (way out of warranty), and it hasn't shown any evidence of sweating / leaking since (now done 85,000 miles, and just reached its 15th birthday). Personally, I don't think any kind of leakage (sweating or not) is acceptable on a motor as new as yours/ most of ours. Rolling Eyes

Thanks DND3 for your view; Thumbs Up it helps me knowing that I am not just being a pedantic difficult customer in the negotiations that will definitely occur between me LR and dealer. I have just seen the drivers side front drive shaft has started to leak at the diff housing. I reckon the whole front diff has a sealing problem. I remember someone else on the forum commented on the poor sealing of diffs such that they suggested superglue was used Shocked Winger's comment in this thread http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic3479.ht...p;start=15

At the dealers desk in a loud and angury voice, YOU DONT HAVE TO WOREY ABOUT ABOUT IT WHEN ITS
LEAKING, THE PROBLEM IS WHEN THE Censored THING STOPS LEAKING , ITS GOT NO Censored OIL LEFT. Big Cry
In the background some prospective customers were seen quickley departing Exclamation
Needless to say the dealer was not inpressed, eney way I had a lemmon Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry
After some years with Nissan then Tojo the D3 came along and with Ford putting a rocket up LRs Censored
it was time to have another go and it is a wonderful 4wd even with a fiew problems and a mind of its own Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Thats my six peneth worth, your leaks will be fixed and the grin will return Very Happy Very Happy

Great news today in that land rover have agreed to replace the whole front diff Very Happy . Furthermore the dealer will be buying the required lifts/equipment to do the work. The technician is happy now that he will be getting new equipment and something different to do. It seems the d3's around here are boringly reliable Rolling Eyes

Australia

I've got only 3000km to end of warranty and, since I'm off to China next weekend, I though I'd better change the oil before the trip to Perth. And look what I found, a weeping/leaking front diff.

Looks like it's one last trip to the dealer!
 Have a nice day!

Good timing Jamo
Mine is due to be done next week
As you travel a long way to a dealer, I would make sure your they have the right equipment to do this job; my guys here in Cairns tell me they need a special lift. So the landrover still leaks!
