Wheels, tyres and snow....
I know this has been done to death but...
I am off to Chamonix in Feb. Just bought a set of SE spec 18s from ebay tonight (£200 incl 2 good tyres). Plan is to put some winter tyres on them.
Any advice re tyres I can use for the winter, for the long drive to France plus in snow?
Also - what is the score re chains.....?

Tyres for 18's is a bit of a narrow choice really. Reckon the AT2's will probably be reasonable in occasional snow.
(They have 'holes' in them that look like studs would fit in - don't know anything about studs or how they fit so I'm probably spouting rubbish again)Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

There is the pirelli snow and ice. The Nokian WR. I have that. It is cheaper than the pirelli and is excellent. (Just was in a test one of the best)

Daniel,
Have you switched yet ?
Was supposed to last weekend, never got round to it ! And this week found myself in a frozen forest with 50cm's
The Scorpions we're great until they broke traction
Just been up to around 2000m this afternoon, not great with the summers on
Still seamed to have traction than most others with winters on.
Soft rubber here I come.
RE: Snow chains. I can recommend Centrax as the easiest to fit, although not sure about 18x255x60's
If you've never fitted chains, then practice first.
I just watched this week a guy in an underground carpark fit some. There was a steep ramp at the exit, which being underground meant that it NO snow on it
As you can guess matey boy spent 15 mintues trying to battle the ramp with almost no traction, steel on concrete
I have not fitted chains to the D3 but if I can get the right size Centrax, then this is what I'll go for. 5mins to fit all 4 !!Mrs Jones ? We've come for your Liver

Have my wintertyers on. Nokian 235 /60/ R18. They are perfect. I will put after this one the size 255/60/R18 on it becuase it protects my rims better from scratches. Did last year a snow and Ice training in Elm. Gets you anywhere up. But as always wtihout chains don't forget if you go down 4 wheel drive with wintertyeres let you also loose traction very fast.

I have just bought 4x19" Pirelli Scorpion Snow and Ice from the local Budget Plus in Stirling and they are doing them at 25% discount this month. I bought 4x Pirellis and a new BFG Mud Terrain for my 90 for £580, inlcuding removing the old summer tyres from my spare RRSport 19" wheels and the old BFG AT from the 90's alloy, fitting the new ones , valves and balancing.
And I was in Coventry at the weekend when it snowed hard on Sunday evening and my Snow and Ice tyres were in Scotland............................ it's called good planning and not believing the weatherman, although thankfully the snow had all gone by the time I left the hotel at 8:30 this morning. Now a disillusioned new Land Rover buyer and have jumped ship to something less expensive and more reliable that hugs trees.... now driving a Mini Countryman PHEV as well as my trusty and brilliant 1996 Epsom Green Defender90 Tdi300

can u use a snow n ice trye for a long journey eg to alps?
Yup, they're a proper winter tyre, not just for snow and ice but for any weather when the temperature is low (below 7°C). Toying with getting some as the AT2s aren't fabulous on cold, wet roads and I've got enough wheels to have a set of AT2s and winter tyres.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Yup,
They are all 4 season tyres.
It means 3 winter seasons of usually 5 months, Nov-March and then the final season is a summer season, so that you keep them on after the final 3rd winter season, then bin them after that. ie you should get 25-30k kms out of them.
Long journeys, no probs, they'll just where down a little quicker that summers.
But when you arrive in the Alps, it's night and day summer vs winters Mrs Jones ? We've come for your Liver

@ Tim:
Love to know how you get on with the Scorpions ?Mrs Jones ? We've come for your Liver
Winter tyres are usualy marked with MS M/S or M+S and have to conform to a specific design criteria but are not tested in snow!
The severe snow tyres like the Pirelli, Nokian and Verdestein have a symbol of a mountain with a snowflake in it beside the M+S and these tyres are tested in snow.
As long as you dont excede the speed limits of the tyre and stop to let it cool you should not have any problems. So far I have driven about 3000km on Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with M+S rating on the side of them and tho noisey they have performed fine and I've driven from John o' Groats to Germany with them.

Well I collected the wheels and they have two good Wrangler M&S tyres on. So I guess I might as well just get two more of them? Unless anyone thinks they arent good !?
