Does anyone know what is involved in installing longer wheel studs. The BMW wheels I am ussing require different wheel nuts and the standard wheel studs only allow about 5 turns before nuts is tight. Whilst No nuts have come loose so far, I'd like to longer studs if possible. There is plenty of depth still available inside the standard nuts so wont cause a problem there. 5-10mm longer is all It needs.

I had the same issue with similar rims . Luckily my local tyre fitment had longer ones off the shelf

Horto, from my supplier I believe the BMW should be the same as the LR (both studs are 14x1.5 - whatever that means) but he is also advising me re steel 17" rims and he said that the Landcruiser 100 series nuts are suitable. (Edited to refer to nuts instead of bolts.)
If that is the case you might like to check if the more common LC nuts are available in a longer length.

Did anything come from you enquiry about steel rims? Steel wheels would be my preference for outback travel. (easier to hammer dents out!)
My local tyre dealer also managed to strip one stud when using a rattlegun. How difficult are they to replace?

Hi PJJ, the steel wheels are here but I haven't purchased them yet. Price is around $130 and in Brisbane the delivery is about 3 working days. But other than that I am still running my 17" OEM alloys with Cooper Discoverer ATR (235 section width).
Rattle guns should not be used to tighten the wheel studs only to remove them. I carry a torque wrench and make sure they are taken to up the Land Rover prescribed setting of 140 Nm.

Yes, I was fairly disappointed when this happened to the stud. This was the 2nd 'incident' with the dealer. I had Cooper HT+ fitted 20ks ago & they managed to stuff two wheel nuts that time (about $30 ea) by using a 23mm socket instead of a 22. This time the tyres were in for a rotation & I even handed the tyre fitter my own 22mm socket & bar to use. It will cost them more than $60 this time!

I would seriously be looking for another dealer / tyre fitter.
Stripping studs is not an easy task, so your god only knows what else they could f*** up without trying.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on this site that someone had purchased the steel rims and they rub on the brake calliper due to the dishing on steel rims (if you know what I mean). I would have them test fitted before purchase.

Wopac5 Yeah, that had passed my mind. I'll have to wait until they have a new stud fitted though. ( At the LR dealer of course!!!
