There are two other factors:
Is the D4 being slightly lighter (?) easier on them?
Are the multiple supercessions of wheel bearing part numbers indicating an improved part?06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Hi Steve,
Down to just 230Nm / 169 lb-ft now. Originally it was a staggeringly high 350Nm!

I have just had a failed wheel bearing diagnosed. No play but very noisy when the wheel was spun. Mileage is 57k.

Had driver side front done at service 74k, now have a rumble and vibration from the passenger side front at 76k - should of had both done when first went.
Rumble happens when turning right - classic case of faulty bearing being the opposite side to the direction turned, due to the weight transfer of the vehicle.

I have not studied the design of these bearings but surely that amount of torque is not put on the balls/rollers, if it I was I doubt the wheel would rotate, it can only be put on the inner ring and the outer ring must be preset.
Oh for the days of taper bearings and grease nipples It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
