Theres me thinking it was a blower to dry your fingers before a set of 'S' bends with an X5 in your rear view mirror.

Digging up this old thread to ask... Could someone post the text of this TSB? My car was in with Ripon LR today for 15k service and to fix this, and they reported having done some 'recalibration' of the temperature sensors, but didn't fit any foam pads. The dials were both eventually round to 27 to stop me from freezing on the way back this evening

TSB No LA412-003
A customer may report a concern that during long journeys, the cabin temperature drops to below the set level.
Cause:The in-vehicle temperature sensor within the heating system is detecting additional heat from behind the fascia. The heating system incorrectly attempts to reduce the cabin temperature to compensate.
Action:Should a customer express concern regarding the above, refer to the Service Procedure detailed in this bulletin to insulate the sensor from the additional heat source.
They will be able to download the doc and sort for you.

Are these foam pads something every car needs or is it a problem only for certain cars? I spoke to the dealer and was told that it is normal for the heating system to emit cold air after a while in an effort to keep the ambient temp at the level set. Although my reasoning would be that in this instance what works for one should ,by the nature of the fix, work for all.

I think its 'required' on all but the latest builds. And its only 'required' on customer request or complaint about the cold air.
There is still a very low volume of fresh air from the face vents but not enough to reach the body and feel cold.
Quote the TSB number to the dealer and request it be fitted. Or at least they check to see if its already there.

Thanks
Dealer seemed reluctant claiming I would need diagnostics to see if there was a problem. My car is 18 months old so will definatly not have the foam fitted, and as I say if the foam insulates the sensor in one car it must work for all reguardless of wheather you report a problem although he mentions something about internal flaps behind the dash opening to soon which made the problem worse. His logic was the foam is only needed on cars with this fault

There is a sw update for the HVAC system but as long as you've had the enhancement program and it was correctly done... you should have this. All they have to do it remove the panel and fit the foam. Takes literally 10 minutes.
Diagnostics are not needed over and above an engineer doing the job. If they've already applied the sw updates then they should be able to do this in the car park.
All the foam part does is ensure the sensor does not pick up false readings from inside the dash - which gets warm. Takes readings from through the grill only.
