Webasto ThermoTop V + 1533Timer - Still having to brave cold

Hi

I've connected a 1533 timer to the Webasto ThermoTop V on my 2007 Disco 3 but it doesn't work as I had imagined it would...

The install was easy enough:

1 - It came with a complicated wiring harness which I guess includes diagnostic plugs but I unwrapped the tape and traced four wires which match the 4pin plug that fits the timer. Red = +ve Brown = -ve Yellow = Wbus and black = out
2 - I've put a 20amp fuse holder on the red wire and connected it to the battery terminal.
3 - The brown wire is bolted to the bodywork.
4 - The yellow wire had a barb and I’ve connected it to the number 2 port on the FBH plug.
5 - I couldn’t find an instruction anywhere, of what to do with the black ‘out’ wire so I’ve just isolated it for now.

On a frosty morning the FBH used to start up (and still does) with the engine – it doesn’t smoke but just smells of half-burnt diesel for the first few minutes, then purrs away nicely.

I’ve set the timer for 07:30, 16:00 and 17:30 for 30 minutes each time and set the clock but nothing ever happens when the clock strikes those times. However, when I press the flame button, the FBH fans start and run for two minutes but it doesn’t fire up, unless, the engine has already been running. When the FBH has been running I can switch it on/off by using the flame button

Any advice would be appreciated – particularly if someone knows what to do with the ‘out’ wire.

Thanks

Chris

The out wire is for an led so you know when your FBH controller is running. It provides a positive feed only so your led ( or bulb ) will require grounding too. Thumbs Up
Your controller will also only work when the car is asleep, fact.
No idea about the timer as I don't use my 1533 set up like that. I have a remote blip that trips the flame button and fires up the FBH. Works perfectly and has done for 5 years.

Thanks Guys - Odd that the 1533 timer doesn't work as a timer but its just as likely to be a LR characteristic as it is a Webasto fault.

My Disco often adjusts its suspension in the middle of the night so maybe it isn't properly asleep.

Sounds like I'll need to fit the GSM unit too - or maybe train the wife, kids or the dog to nip out and press the flame button for me!

Wife + kids option won't work I'm afraid, remember this, the car must be asleep for the 1533 to work.
Remote operation ( unless you can reach the timer without waking the car ) is the only option. Wink

Have tried getting the teenagers out of bed early to warm up the car but they only ever communicate to me if its a text messages about teatime these days... Didn't even bother risking a stern look from the wife and the although the dog's training is going well, I thought it might be best to re-read the instructions...

Found these two in the Webasto 1533 book (on different pages)

Three starts can be programmed, but only one can be activated.

Select and activate pre-set time
Press the SET button within 10 seconds until the program number with the required pre-set time is displayed.

What it doesn't say is that you have to set it every time you want it to switch on, so it's not like a central heating control or any other timer ever invented.

As long as I remember to set it for an afternoon burn when I park it at the station and then again for the next morning, once I get home, everything should be fine - the dog can concentrate on doggy things and everyone can stay inside, away from the nasty 14degree autumn weather!

Get yourself one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-7A-Transmit...Swa~BYcoJR wire it to the flame button as per this mod ( page 30 - 32 ):https://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/us...20v1-1.pdf and that should have you up and running with your own remote. Thumbs Up
