WEBASTO FBH - winter edition |

Hi there! for those that don't have the Webasto FBH remote option or a timer option, is there a recommend procedure for warming the engine in winter to avoid the b d crankshaft snapping and engine wear and tear? Someone suggested running the engine on idle for about 5-10 minutes for the coolant to warm up before setting off particularly when the weather hits 0 deg. Others have commented that it's better to drive straight off as the idle isn't particularly good for the engine.....looking forward to a winter of 4 x 4 driving!

you wont stop the crankshaft issue as its not related to wear its in the hands of the gods!!

Hi,
be "mechanically sympathetic" until the engine is up to normal temp and thats not just when the temp gauge gets up to normal think about oil temps as well, it can be 10 miles 1/2 hour or more before coolant and oils are up to a reasonable temp and the FBH will have fired up on its own if its needed.
Then drive it like you stole it
but dont forget the last bit of your journey needs to be back to "mechanically sympathetic" again

But start with very regular oil changes, with the right spec for your engine… with a A+ brand oil filter changed…. I try to change it around every 5000 miles… with a Mahle oil filter….
Idling does not give a lot of oil presure, and that oil presure is part of the problem… (on a D3 tdv6 that is, but we do not know what you have)
Snapping crankshafts is more for D4 tdv6’ es, not for petrol V8 and TDv6 in D3’s though.. Best regards
