Weak join in air intake plastic pipes

Hi. I am surprised I can’t find any reference to the following.....

The large diameter black pipe from the Air filter joins another pipe down the side of the radiator on the near side. After 13 years of maintenance the clips and screws that hold these pipes in place are not what they were. Because the pipe join is simply a friction fit it relies on all the clips working and holding the two pipes in the right place. Mine had a gap that meant the air bypassed the filter and went to the engine via the gap. Great in saving cost of filters but not ideal especially if wading Shocked

I now have a cable tie around each pipe and another going around the other two to ensure the pipes stay joined. Anyone had same issue and if so what was solution. I am not sure that replacing all screw fittings will suffice.

If anyone is searching for the source of whooshing sound when accelerating and especially when backing off the accelerator this may be something to check.

there's a nack to that pipe which I can never remember!

There is also a seal between the pipes.

But basically:

Apply a little WD40 to the top pipe and dribble all around the diameter. (to the inside matting part)
Mate the pipes.
Support the bottom one with your hand and push down on the top one.
If you do it right they will click together and be difficult to part

Thanks Pete. I am now wondering if I simply failed to push them together hard enough. I will check again as part of the prep for my big European trip.
