Am I right in thinking that the rust has to be taken off, at least so it doesn't flake, before treatment with something to neutralise it before the final protectant is applied?
The last thing I want is it just covering up to continue to rot underneath it.

I used Dinitrol 4941 on the chassis and underside of my body and I am very happy. I also used ML3125 inside the chassis and body cavities.

Carried out the work in 2019 and covered 35,000 miles since. Heavy offroad, all weathers, gravel tracks in europe. Its all still there and its all still good.

However I believe prep is everything. I grinded all the rust down to bare metal. Most of the chassis and the entire underside was washed down with Bilt Hamber surfex HD, treated with Bilt Hamber hydrate 80, painted with zinc primer, overcoated with some paint (i cant remember) and then sprayed with two layers of the above mentioned Dinitrol.

A lot of work..

I can't say these products are any better or worse than others, only that so far I am very happy with the dinitrol.

Edit: I should put more emphasis on the Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80; it really is good stuff.

Thanks for that, a proper job!
There is a place in Spalding that uses Dinitrol, I may have a trip out to see what they say they will do prep wise (obviously not body off though).

First - there aren’t any miracle cures for rust.

What fixes it is a combination of cleaning the surfaces properly, getting rid of ANY preexisting rust, applying some kind of rust converter, applying rust protection on top of that and “cavity wax” inside bulkheads.

If someone’s technique is to spray waxoyl or similar on top of surface rusted areas they’re doing it really wrong.

My two euro cents.

I've used Aqua-Steel extensively during my narrowboat repaint last year, got the tip from friend who works the rigs, it's what they use, I'd left the hull blacking too long, killed the waterline rust dead and went hard after 24 hrs, superb stuff, and if it works on that surface? Just a thought.

lonoguard for me Thumbs Up

Got it on Black Friday on sale and did it over the summer whilst warm and dry. Quick wiz over with a wire brush to get any lose bits off, good jet wash off (I went with some other treatments to remove other dirt too but not essential), left to dry over night and they spray on. Very quick and easy to apply.

Have got enough left to give a few more coats too.
