Water and your Winch

What's the general consensus on how wet can you get your winch? 8)

That's my marketing technique with the catchy title and the 8) - wanted to see if (a) I could get some answers and (b) see how folks reacted... Twisted Evil

Wet your winch , wench or whistle as much as you like , but it is always a good idea to make the winch work hard enough to get hot as soon after as possible . This should get most of the moisture out where it doesn't belong

Winch and merky/clean water is not a problem.

When the water is muddy, or submerging the winch in mud, could have adverse affect on it's performance. It this is the case, just have it serviced every 6 months or so.

I have been down this road a couple of times, and when the release mechanism of the clutch stop the reel from releasing, I knew a service was due. Never broke a winch. 8)
