Submerged mine loads of times and had no problems In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Wet your winch , wench or whistle as much as you like , but it is always a good idea to make the winch work hard enough to get hot as soon after as possible . This should get most of the moisture out where it doesn't belong
Are you sure you are talking about the winch here, heine? 2006 Zermatt Silver TDV6 'SE' Auto, Mantec sump guard, Frontrunner roofrack, Lightforce 140s, split charge system and... a Jetboil.

Winch and merky/clean water is not a problem.
When the water is muddy, or submerging the winch in mud, could have adverse affect on it's performance. It this is the case, just have it serviced every 6 months or so.
I have been down this road a couple of times, and when the release mechanism of the clutch stop the reel from releasing, I knew a service was due. Never broke a winch. 8)Why is the fear of long words called hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia?

My winch operates under water, mud anything you like. never had a problem.CLUB "Ah Shor it'll be grand"

Yes Chris. But yours is hydraulic and therefore runs on water.
