Can someone shed some light please..? |
|
Went to start the car yesterday it's an 06 plate, 87.000 on the clock
turned the key and got a clicking noise like a stuck starter... also heard click from relays in the pass door footwell area....
Dash light up light Blackpool illuminations on speed....... You name it it lit up
trip computer listed
HDC fault
transmission fault
special programs
hand brake fault
the doors locked and unlocked
the red handbrake light along with the radio display flashed away...
Due to being unsure whats the issue was, phoned an indy who's answer was get it to me and I'll have a look..... He's 20 odd miles from so would need a recovery truck to get it there... Money i can't afford to waste on a recovery...
So i left the car over night hoping that it would sort it's self out......... Fat chance, after what i have been reading on here and other forums...
This morning went to start her again (praying that a rest overnight would have put her right) ever hopeful.....
anyway same list of issues as per yesterday plus
fading interior light,
seem to have drained the power from my phone when i plugged into the ciggy lighter
then had issues locking her up...
alarm sounding on locking ?
double locking was slow and didn't sound loud & positive like normal.....
can't shut one of the windows now......
So anyone point me in the right direction...
Question... having read countless stories similar to mine...
What is a cancan or canbus ?
Would putting a new battery on sort it out ? as I have read that a iffy battery can cause this fault ?
battery "might" be the OE one... how do i tell ?
I have no mechcanial knowledge and all the forums read like a wire nightmare with emu this and ecu that...

If you're unlucky:
Alternator has gone mammeries elevated and taken the battery with it.
If you're a little lucky:
Battery has died and needs replacing.
If you have golden testicles:
You have a loose battery terminal or a loose earth strap.
As you have a manual, bump start it and stick a multimeter across the battery to see what the alternator is doing. Search the forum for failed alternator/battery.
Good luck with it. Mods:

Sounds as if it could be the battery to me. If you need a new one try tapping Disco 3 car battery into the internet. I think it's a 019

If you haven't fitted a Denso branded alternator, you may have fitted a cheapo and they are renowned for failing after about 12 months, some after weeks.
Lets hope it's just the battery. Mods:

Remove the EPB switch cover next to the drivers seat (black plastic rectangular cover with one corner curved). You flick it with a small flat screwdriver and it will just shoot out. Underneath is a loop of cable, like bike brake cable. Get a pair of suitable pliers on ti and pull as hard as you can. May take several attempts. Eventually it will lurch and you feel the cable give and the brakes will have been manually pulled off. If you can't work it out you car rescue service will know how and do it for you. Some where on here must be a photo I am sure.
You might have to forage around under the gubbins covered by the cover to find the cable, sometimes it's well hidden. 2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

I wouldn't be trying to bump start it..... I would charge the battery overnight and you'll probably find all is well....sounds as though your battery has given up...it is that time of year!
Alternatively jump start it with a set of quality jump leads but let the donor car run for a while to put a bit of charge into the battery first before trying to start it!
Good luck!

That's a very good point, you really don't want the hassle of re latching the EPB to add to your woes, go with a jump start instead. Mods:

Be warned, you need to check the output from the alternator.
These forums are littered with alternator failures that have killed batteries, the battery gets replaced only to die within days and having to be replaced again due to the alternator having a dead short.
Your symptoms are the same so get it checked out. Mods:

A canbus is the way the electronic control units on the car communicate with each other. You're not afraid of the dark are you ?
