Me too! Its just so practical, loads of space, eats the miles en-route and will carry everything involved (we don't travel light when the wifes packed the fitted kitchen).

and don't forget that the base 5 seater with springs is pretty good value (provided 7 seats aren't essential). This gets all the space, most of the on road good manners and around 75% of the off road capability. i've only covered 3k but the grin hasn't faded. However, with hindsight i do now wish I'd stretched the budget for 7 seat air sprung becuase of the extra gadgets

I have owned a D2 & D3's. 2 of them had minor warranty issues, which were sorted out. This car is very capable, very comfortable & very solid. I would consider buying a warranty if you can, or get one with a decent warranty the D3 is a very complex annimal & if any large components were to fail it could be a very expensive repair. I dont suppose many breakers have them lying about cheap either !!!! 2007 TDV6 HSE 'Silver Lady'. With 'free' privacy glass LOL.

"Richard Hammond, also of Top Gear fame, lauded it as the "Best 4X4 of all time".
In Australia, the vehicle was awarded "4WD of the Year" by virtually all of the 4WD press, impressing often conservative journalists of "hard-core" magazines after it effortlessly ambled where the traditionally highly-rated Toyota LandCruiser and Nissan Patrol had to scramble.
Amongst the off-road driving and Land Rover enthusiast community, the all-new Discovery has gradually gained acceptance. Given the improved road-going qualities of the vehicle, many were worried that the vehicle's off-road abilities would be compromised, and others expressed doubts about relying on electronic systems in extreme conditions. However, by 2006, 2 years after the vehicle's launch, the vehicle's abilities and reliability have been proved both by the press and private owners."

It won't be until later this year but, unless something totally unexpected comes up, I'll be taking the plunge and buying myself a D3.
Judging by the responses I got to my query, and having read some of the other messages on this site, I think I'm going to be in good company.
Thanks to everybody for all the advice.

Chancer,
Back to the subject of your question:
I had a nissan xtrail before. Although it it still presented as the top of it's class I was unhappy with it.
Off road it manages something but you will soon meet the limits (don't trust the journalists who write about off-road capabilities in standard car-magazines: they like to put their buttom in an on road-mercedes and get rewarded in some way for their POSITIVE comments). Soon means soon even for a person that doesn't do any systematic off-roading. I don't do but I found out that each car has limits. I got stuck with the disco3 as well. Mainly because i am not a systematic off-roader: off road stupidity. Happened in the Xtrail and happened in the LR. But the LR case was far more extreme than the xtrail case.
On-road:
No doubt whatever. Comparing the LR with the xtrail is like comparing a Wartburg to a Ford.
Believe me. Mainly the x-trail was a frustration because of to noisy at high speeds. For family use with occasional distances the xtrail is OK. IN my case where I spend few days on the road it is horrible. The LR is wonderfull.
Reliability:
I had the small things of the early 2005 version which were nothing more than annoyance (and at that time stress caused by the fear it was more than annoyance). All things have been solved by software updates (this means that in an average car, you wouldn't know about things happening). Only the noisy Windshield wipers remain to be solved. Hope they have a software update for that soon!
Congatulations for LR that they did hocus pocus and had such a complicated, powerfull, comfortable, ... -some say the best 4x4xall- car just out of the blue. With, as far, a nice reliability!
Good luck and choose a GOOD dealer! It helps in case of problems.

In the interests of Clarity - just buy the D3 and "have done".
Like you - I ended up paying more than I planned to. I bought a used 54 from a dealer. I was nervous about it, I had owned Audi Quattro's for a few years. I have a growing family.
With the help of this site and the fantastic conributors i got straight on top of the dealer situation and the warranty issues.
5 months later and 12k miles later, its the best car I ever owned. I can't see me not buying another LR in the foreseeable future.
It's really easy to go on for pages about how good the car is. But I won't - my typing is crap and it takes ages.
do it.

Speaking of dealers, it's the Stratstone Landrover Dealer in Newport Pagnell I've been dealing with so far. Does anybody have any experience with them?
