Wanted: Roof rack
Not sure which rack I want .. L/r Expedition maybe?
Would welcome any offers of racks for sale, or any information on which type is best & why, and where I should buy it and how much to pay.
The rack is likely to end up carrying an oz-tent & kayak in adventure mode, and ladders & materials in DIY mode.
Thanks in advance,Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

Sounds like a Frontrunner rack may be best.
It is much more suited to long items like a kayak/ladder. Alternatively, you can get the LR Eped rack cheaper and take off all the fairing/sides like Gareth has done. See his gallery.Disco 5 HSE Lux

be aware - the oz tent (or at least the RV4) will not fit 'inside' the expedition / g4 rack - I balance mine on top. Fortunately, I have the luxury of an extra moveable bar in the middle of the rack (which I don't think is standard issue):

If you are not gonna put anything very heavy on the rack, ie. over 100kg, I think the LR is a better option. Looks better, and is a bit quieter, pobably because of the more aerodynamic front, and 'cos its mounted a bit closer to the roof level than the FR.
If you need sheer strength, go for the Front Runner.
I have both, or rather had both, 'cos I just have the remains of the LR rack left....but that's another story

Thanks folks, think that confirms what I was thinking.
Do those cross bars on the top of the LR rack come as standard?
Anyone able tell me how much (roughly) the Frontrunners are, & who sells them?
thanks,Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

The LR Expedition rack has the front fairing, and a cross bar at the rear. They're not designed as load bearing, but would easily take a kayak or ladder. The extra cross bar BCB has is not standard - I believe it comes fom a D2..... They cost around £500, but may be got cheaper on Ebay. (The rack, not the D2 crossbar )
Frontrunner racks are around £800? (someone will confirm or ridicule ). You won't find one on ebay, but they are an excellent rack. Frogs Island 4x4 do them, I believe.Disco 5 HSE Lux

This is what the LR one looks like once you have removed the side rails and fairing
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I picked my Expedition rack up from the forum for £250 including the matching ladder and tarted it up with help from my Father in Law.
It came complete with a 3mm Chequerplate floor panel which makes it tough enough for a fat bloke to walk on.
Even though the "floor" almost covers the phone aerial it doesn't effect the reception.
Given the price it's brilliant.

Thanks folks
Even though I suspect the frontrunner is probably the 'best' I suspect I'm going to go for the LR rack.
Now all I've got to do is find it at the right price.
(and the driving lamps, brackets, towbar, electrics, Raised intake, oztent, fridge, PC, touchscreen, ... .... ... anyone know what this Saturday's lottery numbers are??)Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

there is a pattern to be found in the gallery - matches the standard chevroned one found on a G4 Expo Rack
These photos also show the 'mythical' second D2 cross bar that came standard with the G4 spec onesSteve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)
