[Wanted] Rabbits

Hi

Prepping for my nephews next bushcraft camping/canoeing trip next weekend, and have tried to order a couple of whole rabbits from my local butcher but he’s unable to get anything at the moment citing the ‘shooting ban’ Rolling Eyes

I know the GL thing isn’t on rabbits and that it’s being revoked but it has dried up my supply and means I can’t get hold of a couple so I can teach him skinning butchering and cooking the rabbit. We did a couple of pigeons last time but he wants to try a rabbit now.

Short of me paying a trip to Pets at Home is anyone doing a bit of shooting this weekend around Wirral/Chester area who thinks they could bag a couple? Happy to share a few beer tokens for the trouble.

I haven’t shot rabbit for a few years and don’t have permission for the golf course I used to do a bit of shooting on, or access to a suitable gun currently.

Bit of a long shot (pardon the pun), but you never know

going back a bit but wasn't there a butcher's in Liverpool who usd to advertise as "The Mad Butcher" ? ( could be wrong, it was 1982 when i bought off them).

They had Rabbit ... took longer getting the pellets out of it than skinning it. Laughing

That's just what I need, someone reasonably local who doesn't mind popping a couple off for me. I don't even need them peeling!

Just p Censored d and gutted will be ideal. We are looking to skin and butcher at camp

From memory, my father always skinned first then gutted.

It did cross my mind ....

Re: gutting, I agree but just thinking if I get them soon bit I don't need them until next weekend... I may freeze whole and if so I'd want to gut them first? Then defrost next weekend for the 'lesson'

It’s fine to bung them in the freezer whole without gutting them first.

If you were down here you could camp and shoot your own. The shooting ban didn’t affect rabbits or any other mammal just birds👍🏻

Paunch it first never heard of them being frozen whole. Don’t forget to pee it first too.

Cheers - I know I seem to live in the wrong part of the UK Sad

Yes I always 'pee' them usually straight away. Only really thinking of freezing 'whole' to allow the prep lesson next weekend, appreciate it's a bit unusual.

The 'shooting ban' comment came from the butcher, I think what he's been told by the guys that supply him (he's licenced for game but just gets bits and bobs to order) is that nobody has been out shooting due to the previous GL issue recently so he's not been able to ask them to try and bag a couple of bunnies whilst out.

Frustrating for such a simple thing to try and get hold of isn't it!
