[Wanted] Estate car - working car

My son will be moving his Velar on in October and doesn't know what to do next (hoping to be working in Canada in 2020 with his company if it goes to plan) and needs a car for travel to work and given he has his house still to finish off an estate car fits the bill (and, more importantly, passes the attentions of the local tip Nazi's.......).

Not looking for anything flash as this will be a workhorse and home-to-work vehicle only so condition not a major worry but reliable, decent consumables and a decent MOT the main factors.

His budget can be whatever he wants but given its usage he's looking to spend no more than £1500 really (and is realistic about what they will get him)

Apart from above mechanical needs he's looking for a larger type estate (Mondeo sort of size) and it could include MPV's at a push and he's looked at things like Freelander's etc. but those sort of vehicles will be more about right-vehicle-right-price-right-time rather than a conscious choice.

Anyone got anything coming up in next couple of months or so?

All the recommendations are in the mix (maybe not the Superb at the available budget......)

Open to pretty much anything TBH but it's an actual car wanted not suggestions I'm looking for though.....

Started the usual web trawl and have to say I'm leaning towards Subaru Legacy or Forester as something a little bit different, good solid motors and good VFM compared to many old ex-family smokers knocking around.

Couple of 4x4 X-Types also in the frame.

A friend has had a few Foresters and complained about diesel bug. Not sure if it’s a general problem or just her!

I've been through this recently.

My D3 had to go because repairing it just wasn't worth the cost of the parts.

I'm getting a D4 in a few weeks when I get a lump sum I'm due, but for a few weeks I need an estate car, preferably Diesel, to carry the dog and various building materials around in, plus use everyday to commute to work.

And I had exactly £1500 to spend.

I looked at Mondeos and Passats, and found them dull, so starting looking at Legacy estates like the GTB import I used to have, but they were all too far gone at £1500.

I wanted something interesting and fun, so took a big gamble, but it's the best £1500 I've ever spent.

1.9TD, although the boot area is quite small the seats do fold down flat.
It has a Full service history, actually goes really well, despite not being the 2.4TD, and handles really really nicely. It will have to go when the D4 arrives, but soon afterwards I'll be looking for the best 2.4TD or even 2.5 V6 Petrol one I can find as a Toy.

Alfa Romeo 1.9 Sportwagon Veloce

Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

timing could be right for your incoming D4 perhaps...... Whistle

He'd definitely go for something like that over a C5 or Mondeo. Let me know if it comes up for sale Nasher?

Thanks Nigel

Aston Builder, I'm not sure of my timing, but there are loads of them about in the 1.9TD version - 1.9 JTD
But search for the earlier 156 model not the later 159. They are a lot cheaper, and having added wider arches to the 159 Alfa ruined the lines.

Also, it's worth looking for the Veloce like mine, it has a really nice Leather interior and a crude Active rear suspension that when you load some weight in the car pumps itself up to level the car using the motion of the shocks.

Nasher.

Nasher just drop a line if/when the time comes. His Velar goes towards end of October but he will need a car in place ahead of that in reality just to get to work.

I'd rather he have something like an Alfa than a euro box brand as come 29th October he's old enough to drive my RRS on company insurance so I know I'll get the "Daaaaaad, can I borrow your car this weekend......" there on Rolling Eyes
