If it was me heading up with the Tin tent on I would head up the east side along the A9 and if you want to come south on the west side avoid passing loch lomand and come back via callendar and along to sterling stopping at Blair Drummond for a stop. Then back via the M74, there is a cl site at Appleby just off the 64 that is a good stop as well.

Thanks Sean. Yes, we are doijng the A9 up, but were thinking of coming back past Loch Lomond. I recall we camped once at Luss. Had not thought about crossing east to avoid Loch Lomond. 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

The road is tight in places along Loch Lomond and was under traffic lights due to a land slip which I am not sure is sorted. I remember a Hgv leaving blackmarks along the side of my van from his wing mirror.
It was squeaky bum time. I was up last year and travelling back from Skye and came back via callendar.
There is a cc site at killing as well that's nice.

Another option to avoid the worst of Loch Lomond is to get off at Tyndrum and head towards Inverary this should pick up the A83 then drop back over to Loch Lomond about half way down, cant remember all the road no's but we did it with the Tin Tent heading to Glencoe last Year and it was fairly pleasant. Worth checking if all the roadworks are still happening at Pulpit Rock and Crianlarich.

Jay, that looks like a long way around, but I need to get into my head that we are travelling to see the country, not get from A to B. I am starting to realise from the comments about scrapes with HGV that a Scottish A-road is perhaps not what a southerner like me is expecting 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Rest of it is fine but just the road along loch lomand in places it's tight where it clips the loch.
If you go up just try not to cram it all in its a big place with some amazing scenery. Why not just try one particular area. The north west takes some beating. I am heading up towards Ullapool and it's a eight hour drive for me without the tin tent. I have done the Rockies, Yellowstone and Tetons along with parts of South America but the west of Scotland is better in my opinion

You are quite right, it's about an extra 30 miles, but it missed out all the roadworks and tightspots at pulpit rock and the other work at Crianlarich, we beat people that went the straight way, by over an hour heading North and some friends that headed south it was even more. Its well worth checking on the local roadworks schedule.
I hope you enjoy it whatever way and area you choose as the scenery in general is fantastic, and as someone has already said its quite hard to choose a route to cover everything in a given amount of time!!

The work at Pulpit Rock has come on a long way - still has works though, but not the sort of delays there were.
The bypass at Crianlarich is now open. Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

iveratry to Lomond takes you over "rest and be thankful" fantastic road but prone to landslides recently ..causing major probs for that part of Scotland as a major route...for the scenic route inverary down to isle of bute at colintrave ferry...then the other ferry to wemyss bay...up thro Greenock or down to ayr ...enjoy

thanks for all the info guys will definately pick up on some of the ideas and info
latest thinking now is to do a 3 week tour in the summer with the tintent and tour round
weve decided to head for the sun in march and just booked Gran caneria for a week.
