Vibration at motorway cruising speeds.

Hi all,
I've been having an intermittent vibration that has become more regular when cruising on motorways. It's not wheel balance.
It is also accompanied by very hot rear brakes.
I had a theory that it might be caused by different rear tread depths causing the 4 wheel drive system to think that one wheel is rotating more than the other and causing the brakes to bind in order to reduce rotation?
I checked and adjusted all tyre pressures, which did need adjusting. I took the disco for another long motorway drive and all was smooth and very pleasant once again.
Have I made the correct conclusion to the problem, or are tread depths and tyre pressures just a red herring?
Over to all you wise owls. Smile

If it were a sticking brake calliper, it would be sticking on permanently, but the vibration is more of a pulsing.
This is why I think the brake is being applied by the stability control/4x4 system to compensate for an over rotating wheel.

Agree with Moo.... had this myself and it drives perfectly normally until at motorway speeds when the overheating disc then starts snatching....once you were off the motorway it drove normally...

Easy test.... drive it around for a little while and then stop and go around and touch each alloy wheel...one of them will be significantly warmer to touch.... Very Happy

If discs are not check the rear prop shaft centre bearing.

that rumbling and hot rear brakes is usually down to sticking handbrake shoes, but it doesnt usually come and go, once it starts its usually terminal for the handbrake shoes - but might be worth checking.

Had a Vauxhall Carlton years ago that did exactly this after main-dealer service, twice!

It was over-adjusted handbrake pads binding when doing more than 60 ... slow down and they cooled/contracted enough not to bind.

I had this and it was a rear parking brake shoe which had become partially detached. Only felt the vibration at certain speeds. Strip and service rear brakes.

Since adjusting tyre pressures to correct levels the back brakes are not overheating and no vibration on motorway.
I know the 4x4 system uses the brakes to prevent a wheel from spinning/overrotating, so, because the tread depth of the rear tyres are different (one with good tread, the other end of life), combined with imbalanced tyre pressures, this is why I think it's causing the vibration as the brakes work to prevent the overrotation on one wheel.
I did also notice the DSC warning light flash on while on the motorway on one occasion during the vibration too.
I should add that I had all new brakes, disks, parking brake shoes, callipers and back plates last year. Basically all new brakes except for front callipers.

I recently experienced a similar vibration problem on my Golf R.
Had all wheels rebalanced to no effect.
Noticed it was worse when cornering in one direction.
Turned out to be the wheel bearing.
If badly worn I’d imagine a wheel bearing would also generate heat from the friction.
Hope you’ve fixed it now anyway.
Thumbs Up

Think people have forgot if you run a permanent 4 wheel drive all rolling radius should be the same or very close, believe VAG models have app 10% allowance BMs around 8% Subras 5% sum older BMs with miss matched tyres are blowing transfere boxes. I have always replaced tyres as a set of 4 and rotated regularly to try and even wear

PCT3. That's what I was thinking. I was waiting for someone to put the fear of god in me about different tyre radius.
