Ventilation flap failure

Hi Chaps,
A mate of mine (I know they all say it!!) has a 55 plate and seems to have a failure in the ventilation flap department. No air is coming out from face vents or front and rear foot vents. Seems as if the screen vent is stuck open as if in demist mode. Consequently the fan is working extra hard to get the cabin temperature down. Anybody know a likely problem ie mechanical or electronic and can this area be accessed without removing half the dash?!!
cheers,
Dan

Dan,

It's electrical... I reckon this is the same problem I had... my windscreen vents wouldnt work at all. Mine was the servo motor that controls this. There's four in total around the centre console, one for the windsreen, one for the face/feet, one for left hand blending and one for right hand blending.

Each motor controls a damper, the windscreen motor is behind the dash to the left of the driver's lower leg.

When I changed the motor obviously I didnt know what I was looking for or where to find it. Took two of us six hours. Then ordered a motor (car in bits and out of action for a week), replaced it and took two hours to rebuld the dash.

Much to my annoyance my right hand blending is intermittent (stuck on freezing when I want heat, or n heat when I want cold). So I've ordered another servo motor from TLO in Yeovil and I reckon now I know what I'm doing it could take me four hours total.

What I could do if you want is photograph every step when I do it and create a manual here. But I'm in no particular rush to do it when the motor comes so could well be in a month's time if that's of any use to you?

It is a bit of a pain job to do, but if you've got a few hours to spare....!

The LR dealer had no idea or how much it would cost, so doing it yourselves is FAR better, and MUCH cheaper (the motor itself is less than £30 so is nothing in the scheme of things).

Thank you nick for your reply. They have just replaced the rear door lock they are used to working on the car!! Sounds like a similar problem. From a ventilation diagram it seems as if its the windscreen flap that is fully open blocking off the other ducts. So the motor as you suggested seems to be a good call. Will pass the message on and see what they say. If you do happen to take any photo's that would be handy. Im sure they wont be doing it that quickly!!
cheers,
Dan

I'm looking for instructions too as I don't get any air to the footwell anymore. I've not managed to work out how to get to the correct bit of the HEVAC to fix it!

Dan, Robbie,

I'll create a manual when I do mine (again!), as I say wont be for a few weeks though. Whether I did it right or not I dont know but to get the centre vertical console off I had to remove loads of other bits first.

Although I am getting the hint that it is going to be quite an event.

Nick,

I have a problem with no air coming out of my face vents. don't want the stealers to do it.
Where can I get diagrams for the venting system from and did you manage to photo your efforts.

I get a server sound when i select window and foot but no server motor sound when I select middle.

Help would be much appreciated.

...first post - great site...

thanks
Simp

may be a blend motor common issue on RR
check here

It seems they are still fitted to the D3

It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

Thanks both, I had tried the self test with high hopes. I get the initial flashing light but not the defrost.

Reasonably confident it's one of the servos but want some diagrams or pics on how to get to them if there are any out there. Really fancy giving a go myself.

Spent a lot of time trawling the site but not really found anything on dash dismantling or accessing these servos.

Any ideas

Thanks
Simp

Anyone that wants me to email them the manual I created - drop me a PM with your email address and I'll be happy to send it to you.

The blend motor http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GENUINE-LANDROV...0574431388 , dont think that's the right one for left/right heat or screen/face/feet outlets. Definately not the same as I replaced, is this a window motor??

Edit - this part number JNC500050 when Googled comes up as a 'motor - cooling blower'. Also may have something to do with the recirculation control

Simon,
Nicks manual was very helpfull I believe. My mate used it when he did his but he did set aside a weekend and I know most of the centre consol came out. He changed all 4 motors as they were cheap compared to the hassle of changing them. I know he did a couple of things slightly different to nick. I will ask him if he took any photo's. There is no better way to get to know yr D3 than to take it apart Laughing
Good luck

Constructive critism very welcome Thumbs Up I'd be interested to see what the alternative methods were as I'd be the first to admit I probably didnt go about it correctly.

Even though this is annoying I am inspired by the have a go heroes on the site and still love the my 3 months experience with my 05 HSE.

Central locking not working - in to the steelers for the second time tomorrow.
Passenger side door lock broken (800 quid quote from the steelers) - not done.
Water in both footwells - sorted using curtain wire (tip on this site)
broken key.

.....land rover turning drivers into mechanics since .....love that quote..

Thanks for your help.
