VAT

Very Happy Hello to all my first post. I have a D3 HSE at the moment but have ordered a D4 HSE for jan. Looking forward to the new D4 Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
Shocked if you pay in full for a new vehicle before the 1st jan 2010 but don’t register it until the new year can you avoid the 2.5% increase on VAT? 2.5% of a lot of money is still a lot of money Shocked

If the invoice date (point of sale) is prior to 1st Jan, the answer is yes. You can, obviously, buy a vehicle that is never going to be registered, so registration is not a criteria. You don't actually need to pay before the 1st Jan either, however the invoice must be dated no later than 31/12.

As long as the dealer is prepared to invoice you and take payment before then, then you should be able to (as long as supply of the vehicle is not deliberately delayed) and it is within 6 months.

Only problem would be wether you dealer can get his head around it!

There was a good post the other day on this same topic, do a quick search for +vat +year & see what turns up Thumbs Up

Hi SJN - Winger's reply is absolutely correct (in my humble opinion Bow down ). The date of issue of the VAT invoice by the dealer creates a new tax point, so technically you only have to get the dealer to issue an invoice on 31/12 Very Happy

However Bodsy's comment about dealers getting their head around it, could be an issue & you may find that the dealer refuses to issue an invoice early Shocked , or if they do, most dealers seem to be insisting on full payment by 31/12 as well (that is not required by the VAT regulations) possibly because they have been stung in the past with tax issues Embarassed or more likely that they just see it as an opportunity to improve their own cash flow Shocked (to be fair they may have to pay the vat as soon as 31/1 depending on their vat quarter).

BUT, beware if you are paying in advance - you do NOT own the vehicle despite having paid, and if your dealer goes "bust" you will be an ordinary creditor and so may not see much of your money back Evil or Very Mad (using a credit card won't help if it's for the full value of a D4 as that exceeds the top limit for protection under the CCA)

Any extension of the VAT break would be welcome, but not sure how the government can afford the loss of the extra tax... after all they have lots of bonuses to pay to bankers Rolling with laughter Pre-budget report is on Wednesday so we should know then Sad

I got my inland revenue info pack last week, it said as from the 1st jan 2010 the vat will resort back the the former 17.5%

There was also a mention of changes to the EU sales.

It looks as tho the discount is over Sad

Pete, HMRC don't know what Mr. Darling might, or might not, be plotting......In fact, it would be a fine example of the efficiency of our Government if you did just get an info pack that became outdated in a matter of days!

Just gravepine gossip, but the suggestion is that the VAT reversion may be delayed a while - perhaps so that VAT can be increased to 20% at the budget.

Personally, I think it is unlikely, unless he has decided to raise VAT in March to 20%. If that was the case, then it would make sense to defer the increase to a single hike. VAT at 20% within a couple of years looks very likely, however.

Still, as with all PBR stuff, it is all up in the air until we hear from the horse himself.

Unfortunately the PBR has provided bad news - no delay in the increase of VAT back to 17.5%. The increase is on 1 January 2010 as scheduled, but no subsequent further increase planned.

Wonder how this will impact D4 sales?, amounts to approx £1000 on the final bill Twisted Evil
