V8 strange sound on first crank |
|
Has been happening for about a month now, when I first start my disco after beeing parked for at least an hour, it cranks just fine, it starts just fine, but I hear a grinding sound coming from what seems to be the top of the engine, for just about 1,2 seconds after cranking and then stops.
If I turn the engine off and crank it again, it is problem free, perfectly normal, as if it now was oiled and before it wasn't.
Had the car in the shop this week and changed the oil, my indie mechanic warned me that I had very little oil in the engine (bellow min and no warning lights). Had done only 20K kilometers.
Could it be some permanent damage? Could it be some kind of chain gone bad? or a tensioner? Hope I haven't ruined it, I was counting on giving it to my daughter when she gets her driving license (it will take about 18 years )
The engine is now 120000 KM, is it time to change distribution pulleys and tensioners=
Should I keep it running 24/7 to avoid hearing the noise?
Advice is very welcome, will repay in beer when in Portugal !

Just made a small video, but it is not too clear except the increased noise the first time I started it:

After much reading and a few opinions later, I am now pointing towards the noise I hear beeing the starter motor. The scraping sound I hear seems to be the actuator not returning to it's casing in time, therefor grinding on something (flywheel?).
Would like to understand this better before going to the dealer and change a million things, when it could be of simple solution.
Cheers,
Miguel

Sounds a reasonable possibilitity. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

It could also be the timing chains. If they are tensioned by a tensioner that uses oil pressure (like older Jag V8) then maybe the non return valve is letting oil out when its stood for a while. As soon as the engine starts, oil pressure tensions the chains.
I might be way off the mark, but......
