V8 4.4 Engine ticking noise when cold - ideas?
I have a 2006 V8 with about 90k miles; very well maintained (FLRSH until I got it and over maintained since).
Recently the engine has started to make a more pronounced ticking sound. It's easy to hear. it's present when the vehicle is started from cold and driven (ie not present at idle). I have a gentle hill out of my house and that's where the sound is most present; ie when under load.
The ticking abates as the engine warms up.
I can post a video (for the sound) if useful but wondered what thoughts were. It seems to be becoming louder over time. I'm wondering if it's the timing chain tensioner (from experience with old Mercedes). If so, is it anything I can do to address or verify the issue?
Appreciate ideas where to start looking.

I would be surprised if it’s the timing chains as they’re supposed to last many times your mileage. Short of opening the engine up I don’t think it’s possible to determine their condition.

I'm pretty sure it's from the rear of the engine, but I'll take a look at the fan. I do think it's internal.PAGODA

Might be a hydraulic valve lifter, you could try an oil change with good quality oil and filter if no other remedy is found. As already said, It could also be an exhaust spit from a crack which seals when hot!

I may hear some tick when engine is cold and under load for 2 times or 3? quite confused, seems like that tick can't be heard when the engine is too cold, sounds a bit like piston slap? but that is almost impossible. haven't got time to figure it out yet, I am guessing it could from my wearing out front differential (some play on the axle bearing) or some unhappy pulleys

If it’s not there when stationary it’s got to come from the transmission train, sound can be deceptive and travel, have you checked the tyres for anything stuck in them?
Check the brake cable to the rear wheels is not rubbing or worn through on the retaining bracket.
If it was the timing chain or cam followers it would be more predominant at tickover when standing.It can when others can't,
