To get back to the original question...
I looked that the v6 drive away deal as well. Then I test drove one and bought the V8. I got a deal on one that was on the yard which had a few other options on it. The v6 was very slow for me. Maybe I had unreasonable expectations, but I felt that I would be cursing the engine all the time.
However, most of the dealers stock was V6. I could have had almost any colour & option I wanted in a v6, I had a good choice of diseasels and I had only 3 V8s to choose from.
I didn't test the diseasel and the dealer said it was 20K more (before haggling). I don't really like the things for irrational reasons.
Since buying the v8 I have found that some accessories, such as safari snorkels are TDV6 only, which is annoying.
Personally I am very happy with my choice. The consumption I get is the same as someone just posted they get with their V6. Performance is good. I have been very happy with how it overtakes 80 KMH trucks on open roads. It does OK in cities and is acceptably fast there.
I just wish they offered the supercharged engine in a D3 at a price I could afford...

I have a petrol V6. It does not lack for power, but I really enjoy the V8 models that that dealer gives me on loan from time to time.
I do get better gas mileage with the V6 (about 15-16 MPG), and only average 13.8 mpg in the V8. To me, it's not a significant enough difference to measure.
The V6 is perfectly mated to the transmission though. Significantly better than the V8 models I have driven (wven those with the patch).
Still, if I had the option, I'd go for the 35mpg TDiV6 or the V8 petrol

Hi Mal99,
As one of the V6 owners on this forum, I can safely say that I am 100% totally thrilled with the D3.
The cars' size, ergonomics, stance, layout, practicality, smoothness and overall ability is the only thing you need to consider when buying. As you, I too do approx 20k/year and most of that is kid pick-up and drop off. I've been on several off road trips and long trips and the vehicle performed brilliantly in terms of power and fuel consumption and ride. I had a D2 V8 prior to this one and certainly do not miss it. I agree that I would have to cover more than 150,000kms before I broke even compared to the TDV6, however $$ and fuel consumption are not the only factors as others have mentioned. To me the decision was easy, as back in Dec 05 they were literally giving the SE's away at $59,990 driveaway (which included metalic paint and 19" wheels ). The 10k difference is still in my pocket and the car is on my driveway ready to rock and roll with the best of them...
Don't forget to squeeze the dealer for the corporate pack depending on which company you work for, they will throw in free servicing for 3 years (covers all parts and labour) All you need is a business card !!
Good luck, no matter which way you go you won't be dissapointed...

I too have a love for horse power!
I bought a 2004 Corvette Z16 (special edition Z06), with over 400 hp. I have raced SCCA events in the past, and graduated the Bob Bondurant High Performance Driving school. I know what HP feels like. The V6 does NOT lack for power....especially in comparison to the earlier Disco's, Range Rover Classics, etc...

The V6 Petrol SE
Well, I bought one and returned from a camping holiday yesterday towing our CT. I love it. I looked at the diesel, but at $11,000.00 extra, it really is a joke. It might have more torque, but it has less horsepower. And it's horespower that gets you over the hill quicker. After all, that is what the definiton of horsepower is. In the owners manual LR show the diesel to be 2 seconds slower from 0 - 60 MPH. That is a lot. Fuel consumption.. well sure the diesel is much better, but over a 4 year lease $11,000.00 can buy a lot of petrol.
On our holiday we came back over the Connodale ranges and up through Maleny to visit my brother. On the hills I passed a Toyota diesel Hilux (an older model) who seemd to be struggling with the hill. Slow and lots of black smoke. The Disco passed it easily towing the CT.
The V8 really appealed, but to go from V6 SE to HSE V8 is around $23K. Simply too much.
If you're in the market for a new Disco, you won't be disappointed with the V6 Petrol. You'll love it.

If I was buying again and letting my head rule the decision, I'm sure the $11,000 would have stayed in my (SWMBO's) pocket.
Still, the heart is happy with diesel (and if I sell it in 3-5 years (to upgrade to a 3lt Diesel!!) I'll get back a fair bit of the purchase price difference v the petrol).

D3 ownership now = 2 weeks. k's now = 2,400. Lt/100 k's = 9.8

My LR dealer had a sheet of paper with a list of "pre-signed" companies on it when I was looking to buy. during the sales pitch they simply asked who I worked for, checked the list for the company name, asked for a business card to confirm I worked there and presto .... instant free servicing.. I too was amazed it was that easy. Having said that though, LR did have to compete somehow against pretty good fleet discounts offered by Toyota, so I guess the corp plan is one way out!
If my company wasn't on the list then I suppose the form would need to be completed etc etc.. Note there were at least 100 companies on the list, so pretty good odds.
What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!
