US sidelight housing
Just been drying out my nearside headlight housing after a 'waterlogging' incident....took ages to get the goldfish out
On inspection of the unit there was another wired lamp holder just above and left of the sidelight housing ....when I pulled it out I found that there was no lamp and the base of the housing was blanked off.
This obviously is where the US spec sidelight running through the orange side reflector is located.......any of our friends across the pond have or could get a photo of the sidelights in action (try not to use a flash )
Thanks in advance 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
It would be great if we could get these working.Matt

Just had a quick look at a 'spare' I have the lampholder is there and it takes a standard wedge type lamp, the US marking is a 3W, I think a 5W might be too much for the restricted space, in the interests of science, i'll have a go at modding it (with photo's of course 8) ) so watch this space....

I'm sure there's a previous thread about this somewhere out there....
What would Mr plods view be on having this working over here? Do remember seeing some D2's with this from what I remember Zermatt silver 06 reg.
Gone but not forgotten !!!

Excellent....What I'm interested to see is if the emmitted light from the lamp gives a spot effect through the orange lens ...or whether it lets the whole strip 'glow'....If it 'glow's' then I will mod mine provided there are no hidden surprises
Martin (you missed a great night BTW)...I think your right ...I tried to search, but I really can't get to grips with the current search facility...why can't we 'google' search through the site yet

They didn't appear to have a problem with the D2's that seemed to all have them just prior to the 2003 model.
Hopefully they have more important things to deal with like the millions of untaxed, uninsured, mobile phone using, dangerous drivers around the country 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
I can't find any pics of a LR3 with the lights on, but I have this one of a RRS.

Right, science bit done
Pic's up in a bit..
forget about stripping the unit, it's a pain in the 'arris
the 5W does create a hotspot, I think a LED would be more so...
However, the indicator lamp is dual filament, so it's not too difficult to link the lower wattage (unused) filament to the sidelights... 8)
Cliff, IIRC, the construction and use regs. allow for any colour light at the front except red, and any colour at the rear except white (with the exception of reversing lights) so amber 'running lights' shouldn't be a problem
The blanking plug is moulded into the reflector assy, there is no way to get a 12.5mm drill bit at the correct angle so I used an old allen key heated to cherry red to melt holes around the edge until I could push the plug out with a small flat - bladed screwdriver. the bits soon came out with a vaccum cleaner with a bit of 10mm copper pipe attached. It's important to clean up the edges to allow the lamp to be fully inserted

hotspot looks worse than it is, although it's quite noticable, a 3W lamp should be better
Indicator unused filament connected to sidelights, not sure about legality in UK

Cool....
What happens when the indicator is activated - if memory serves me right (its been 2 years) I recall in the US that that this solid amber would flash (in the same way as tail lights can do over there)Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Excellent experimentation there TFC , I think the spare indicator filament being on would be fine as long as the indicator works as per the regs when required.
Where did the power source come from for the indicator mod ..is it the spare sidelight module?
I quite like the orange strip light even though light emission is more of a 'spot' than I had hoped.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

the indicator mod would require a relay fitting in each headlight, with a 1 second 'on' delay to ensure that the lights comply with construction and use regs. for US markets, this is done in the software for the CJB, along with extra wiring. otherwise, it would only flash from 5W-21W-5W.... when it should be a full on-off-on-off cycle
I'm pretty sure that a 3W wedge lamp would get rid of most of the hotspot on the side amber bar, the lampholders should be pretty easy to source too
The power source was a spare 12v battery I happend to have, connected to the relevant pins, all was done in my laborotory garage...
Cutting through the blanking plug may be easier with a Dremel type tool - just didn't have one to hand

So given that you experimented with a 12v battery, do you think it will work straight off the exisiting wiring and socket....they don't have to tell the 'puter anything like if you were having Spotlight fitted.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
