Official diagnosis is lack of diesel. 
The sender wasn't working, so no amber warning and no 'restart to get a few more miles'. Suffice to say that the main driver hadn't considered the full ramifications of a dicky fuel gauge... 
Although I arrived with a can of fuel, the car was all set to be winched aboard the recovery truck; SWMBO, child #2 and the brace of dogs keen to depart, so whether there wasn't enough time to prime or whether the sender fault prevented such I can't say.
The culprit appears to be a broken clip on the sender, preventing it from reading properly. Before everyone goes and whacks their car on a 4 post to check the same, be advised that this was tied in with the tank replacement last month, so it's not a fault to add to the ranks of the usual suspects of EGR/turbo/low battery voltage. It may well not have survived the transfer from old tank to new tank.
Hats off to Yeovil LR for prompt attention; if only it could have happened in conjunction with next month's MOT and 4th service, plus thanks again for all the help here, Al in particular as my 'agent'.  Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

I've got some army surplus 20l jerricans knocking around if you want one  I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
