You should have an earth to terminal 86 on your relay, otherwise the relay coil does not have a voltage across it.

Assuming your switch is not illuminated and is a simple rocker which is breaking the feed from the main beam wire (blue) to the relay (red wire to 85) then you don't need an earth connected to it.

Any more info you can provide about the switch?

Without looking at the diagrams I don't know the colour, but I have a feeling that the wires from the column switches are earth switched, rather than 12V.

In that case, you would need to wire a 12V feed to 85 (say) and the wire from the switch to 86.

Will confirm for you shortly...

Main beam wire from the column switch is an "earth trigger" to the general electrical module, and it's blue with a red stripe.

You don't need a separate earth at the relay as the column switch provides it. Effectively the column switch is in the earth feed to the coil, instead of the 12V feed.

Here's a diagram, I don't know which terminal does what on the switch in your diagram (can't work out what the thing is near the middle pin!) so I've replaced it with a schematic.

The in dash switch is just a normal rocker switch On/off, with three terminals

(1) + pos
(2) A light icon
(3) Earth

Hope this helps

Does the rocker switch have a lamp or LED in it, or a illuminated logo etc?

Just wondering why it has an earth, that's all!

OK in that case this won't work, as there is no power feed from the main beam switch to illuminate the lamp Confused

Would going back to the original set up then running a wire direct to the switch from the light unit work

Yes, if you run a wire from one of the main beam 12V feeds - Blue with Black for right hand, Blue with Slate for left hand.

I would imagine that the terminal labelled with a light on your switch is supposed to be the output, so a diagram like this would be what you want..

This will mean that the illumination in the switch will come on only when the switch is down AND main beam is on. Do you want the switch illumination on all the time it's down (main beam on and off) to tell you the spots WILL be used?
