Hi - We've had a 2010 D4 HSE from new. It has clocked about 106k miles, been a great car and a family favourite.
A week ago I picked up a 30k miles 2016 D4 Landmark in Yulong white. The 2010 D4 HSE will be put up for sale soon so for a while I have both. I had thought about a D5 being only a little more - however at that price it wouldn't be a 3.0 model and likely to suffer from new model year gremlins - plus I really like the D4 for all the reasons we all do!
Observations so far of the MY16 when compared to the MY10:
- it feels a bit better sprung (could just be the lower mileage/less fatigue on the suspension)
- it feels little lazier, but if you provoke the throttle, then yes it shifts as expected and I can feel the extra power it has. Though truth be told somewhat marginal.
- the 8speed box is smoother on the gear changes and the engine overall feels smoother/quieter than in the 6speed car. Though this could also be as a result of more gears available and hence it travelling at lower revs
- The steering seems lighter at low speed manouvering
- The reversing camera is dire when compared to the 2010 car! We had specced the 360 camera pack on the 2010 car and the reversing camera on that is MILES better than the 2016 non-360 reversing camera.
- The reversing camera lens also seems to have some (permanent?) distortion/dirt on the lens. Will be looking to replace it at some point...though I can see that the end result will still be poor compared to the 2010 car.
- The general graphics and readability of the dash LCD and centre Infotainment monitor seems to have taken a backward step from 2010 to 2016 (even if more 'functionality' is being displayed in 2016)
- I do like the rear seat entertainment package with the independent headphones. Pity the kids are now no longer young enough to truly benefit.
Don't get me wrong, I really like the new car and very happy to have found such a low mileage one. It will hopefully serve me well for many years to come. Just surprised that some of the items did not progress as much as expected. Plus given that the new car is some 3x the value of the 2010 model, it just underlines how good value the earlier cars are!
There is a long list of things I would like sort out (the car is a good one, just new car motivation I guess):
- I misread the service history and assumed it had been recently serviced. However it will need a service very soon and as it is a 07/16 car then I guess either this imminent service or the next needs to change the belts as well.
- Front discs have noticeable edge/lips so I might change them. Plus the general outdoor rusting on the bells makes we want to change all the discs anyway for aesthetics.
- Left side alloys are fine, but right side have some corrosion on the diamond cut faces. Are these diamond exterior/black interior alloys easy enough to refurb or particularly expensive?
- I need to install tow electrics. Any recommendations? I did them on the 2010 Disco but feel like my desire to do them myself in now low. Again, any recommendations in the SE/Surrey area?
- Install the cubby cool box. Where can I get one from without the USB cut out?
- Replace the rear view camera. I assume there is no option to improve the quality as it is based on the control units being used. Any pointers for where to go looking?
- I have a tracker in the car already and active. However it sometimes seems to take a long time to respond to a start engine or stop engine press of the button. I sometimes have to press it a few times before the car actually does something. Could this be tracker related or key fob battery or a known problem with the security system?
Thanks for any responses. I appreciate I've asked lots of questions in one post and might need to break up into individual posts

Same here. Having previously owned a very good D3 I’m after a D4 before I buy a new Defender 😬
Still trying to understand the different configs, facelifted D4’s, which have stop start and what tax bracket they fit in, my latest conundrum is TDV6 or SDV6 ?
What was out when and where it fits in my budget ?
What a bloody minefield ?
I’m liking your 2016 car, looks great and DEFINATELY something I’m after, thanks for sharing.

^^^^^^
ISTR that early D4 2010 - 2011 were TDV6 or SDV6 and all 6 speed autos (proper gear lever)
2012MY - 2014MY they dropped the TDV6 and fitted the 8 speed auto (rotary dial)
all were the high tax bracket up to this point (£630?)
2014MY - 2015 they were fitted with stop start (HDC button on the centre console was divided into HDC and S/S) which dropped the tax to £325 (?)
all were Euro5 up to this point
late 2015 to 2016 runout models were all Euro6 but still £325 VED
disclaimer - i stand to be corrected on any of the above but im pretty sure its close to the mark 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

Welcome all.
I have other more ‘interesting’ cars and a D4 to D4 change should hardly move needles, however the new one has excited me much more than I had expected
I’m trawling disco forums again
On stop/start, is the MY16 Euro 6 meant to have stop/start or is that objective replaced by AdBlue?
Mine doesn’t stop start and I can’t see any button / option to enable it.

The 2016 has both Ad Blu and stop/start. It’s most likely that the small stop/start battery has had it.

It's the ECO button below the HDC one.

A ha - I missed that.
Yes I now get the disabled light if disabled. So looks like it was enabled all along. But no actual start/stop. Will have to go out for a drive at some point, get the engine warm, switch off climate control, etc to see if it is actually working or not.
I would have thought a week aux battery would come up as a message?

Most likely the main battery. Bought my d4 earlier this year, changed the main battery and myself when the engine turned off for the first time at a junction.

Very nice , picked our 2016 Landmark in Yulong white up a couple of months ago. Had some issues in poor dealer prep which I got sorted out before Christmas and now very pleased with it.
Re the rear camera lens, ours too had something on it. I used a cotton earbud with some very mild abrasive polish and it came up a treat, Anything from Autoglym or Meguirars should suffice, certainly worth a try.Current: MY16 Discovery 4 Landmark
