*UPDATE SOLVED* O/s engine bay rattle on start up. |
|
Hi all,
Just the past few days/week, I have noticed a rattle for about 5 minutes after start up. It tend to self terminate and doesn’t come back till the next cold start.
I have had a look, and can’t see much. The noise sounds like a loose heat shield or tapping metal plate.
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE - new tensioner and belt. It seems to have solved the noise. The old tensioner was Ford Motor Group branded, so I guess the original. The bearing seemed to be in tact and was still holding tension. The belt looked good. Almost as if it had been replaced in the past.
Video shows new tensioner.

Welcome to the madhouse!
If you say a bit about yourself here https://disco4.com/forum/welcome-disco3-disco4-say-hello-5.html it helps when folks are offering advice - garage recommendations etc.
And if you fill in your profile, folks should be able to see what flavour of moneypit you drive without needing to add it to each post
as for video ... upload it to YouTube then paste the link to it in here and it all works.
On YouTube, I usually select the option "unlisted" so that anyone who clicks your shared link can see it but it's not as easily accessible by the rest of the internet dwellers. .

Thanks for your reply.
Profile uploaded 👍. My profile picture is too large and I can’t work out how to post a YouTube video. Today was the day I realised I am behind in technology 🤣. Craig.

You can add the detail of your car in your profile which appears on the list under your name each time you post. Then people know immediately model and year.
Good luck Gary

I needed to add the colour. I did wonder why it wouldn’t work. Craig.

Viscous fan seems ok. The noise is definitely the O/S corner…. 🤔
A bit of YouTube is pointing me down the auxiliary belt tensioner maybe. Craig.

I did see movement in the belt - which does fit with tensioner being faulty - but wouldn't expect that only on a cold start. .

It seems to have a rhythm to it which suggests the auxiliary belt or timing belt, when where they last changed?- time to investigate further.
A simple test for the tensioner is to squrt a small amount of water on the tensioner, this acts as a lubricant, if its faulty the noise will temporary disappear or change tune.
You can disconnect the fan by pulling the feed connector apart above the rad on near side. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I will give the water a try, the belts were done by the previous owner on its 7year service about 10k miles ago. It had an invoice from a company in Glasgow. The invoice says timing belt change and was charged for a timing belt kit too. So I don’t actually know what was changed…
Should I be worried about the Aux tensioner? I am heading up for a week in the highlands tomorrow.
AA at the ready 😂 Craig.
