"It should only be changed when it fails" By then its probably too late !The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
They just make the best of everything they have.
Maybe the OP should ask another area of JLR what the result would be if the oil pump failed, and what contribution they would make to any repairs.
If they say they will make a generous contribution maybe some of us will refit the old oil pumps

I don’t get this thread, seems you’re desperate to not change it, so don’t bother? I’d personally change it on a car of that age regardless of whether it’s the weak design of not, seeing as though you’re in their doing the belts but hey ho.
Edit: and that email from JLR is ridiculous, only change the oil pump if it’s fails..

We don't know what model year the OP has as if it is a newer model he may have the new oil pump! So it would help if he filled his profile in. .

I would certainly go back to them and ask what the consequences are of the oil pump failing - be it the pumping side of it or the casing.
We all know of course, but if you have the time then let's see where it goes! 2014 D4 XS

Please please change the oil pump. I asked the dealership does it need changed, they said failures are caused by incorrect fitting of the belt. One year later the pump failed, cost me £6400. Don’t listen to landrover.

The last D3's were fitted with the later style oil pump however if you are getting the belts changed, it won't hurt to get pump changed at the same time. I didn't change pump when I replaced the belts in 2012 but the belts are due again this Dec as my D3 will be 14 years old and I probably will this time as it might be asking for trouble to bolt a new tensioner onto the pump for a second time.Stu

Maybe just playing on words as James suggests.
The oil pump does not fail (it will wear out), but the casting does fail, so to them the pump is fine.

Theres only 2 views.
Ownership experience view, where the casings on some years fail and totally the engine, and the LR view, whereby everything is peachy and they wouldn't possibly admit to anything being wrong. At all. Ever. 2014 D4 XS
