Unleaded in a TDV6

My wife accidentally put 35 litres of unleaded petrol in our pride and joy today, the fuel light had just come on before she put the petroll in. Big Cry
It has only been driven 20 or so metres off the garage forecourt (small country garage).
Is there any way to drain off the fuel from the fuel tank, or can it be sucked our through the fueling nozzle, or will the fuel tank need to come out?
Will there be any damage to the engine?

If the engine hadn't been started i think a quick drain and wash and replace of fuel would of sorted it.
However as it's been started and driven Shocked

Good luck

If it didn't run long enough for diesel in the fuel pipes to be used up and the petrol to reach the engine you may get away with a flush and change of filter etc. Under no circumstances should you run the engine until this is done as it could be the end of the engine otherwise.

I did the same with another car (not the discovery) it was an audi.
I put 2 gallons into an empty tank, then drove away, only to come to a sudden stop, at a main road Island, holding up all the traffic.
I Phoned up the people I work for they sent out a van out to tow me to the garage.
I then put in £35 of diesel, on top of the petrol.
It then took about a 30 seconds on the starter, to start the engine.
I then had to drive the car to my destination which was about 75 miles, there was not any problems, with the engine, it ran fine. i.e. no miss-firing.
So if you don't put in to much petrol, fill up with diesel, and DON'T pay to have your tank emptyed, fillter changed and pipes cleaned.
It worked for me, and the car is still running O.K.

Years ago we were advised to put 2 gallons of petrol into 15 gallons of diesel in the winter months to prevent the diesel from freezing and had no problems with fuel systems. I recently found out that a mixture of diesel and petrol gives of nasty gasses Shocked The D3 has a very high pressure system and the parts in the fuel system rely on the diesel as a lubricant. The tank does not have a drain, it will have to be removed to drain out the contaminated fuel.

I don't think this would work with the TDV6 engine in our Disco's.....any amount of contamination (especially if it is 20 litres of petrol) could/will cause serious problems with a modern common-rail fuel injection system.

Even if you just suspect that you might have put in some petrol instead of diesel, the advice remains the same....Do not under any circumstances start the engine until you have verified your till receipt and double-checked with the operator at the petrol station.

If you did put in even a small amount of petrol, call LR Assist. Also take the keys out of the ignition to prevent anybody else 'lending a hand' by helpfully turning the engine over for you.

As AndrewS says, it was fairly common practice some years ago (especially for truckers), but modern diesel engines will die very quickly if you try and do that these days.
