Tyres for D3,
Hi
Sorry for being a noob. But my new to me D3 has Rxquest 255 18s, I’d like to change to something that looks better but is still practical on the road. I think they are from Asda and look mainly like road tyres. They still have some tread left. I want something that’s good on the road but will allow me some fun off road if possible without breaking the bank. 😁 yes I want it all for nothing.
But seriously my knowledge of tyres isn’t great, from what I understand wider isn’t always better.
I had a series 2a narrow tyres no horsepower, never got stuck .
So thinking stick with 255s but just a better tread?

Hi,
The first thing you should ask yourself is whats it for? if for looks then you can buy some pretty big narly cheap tyres that look like they could climb anything you chuck at them, but likely as not, be loud, eat fuel, last about 10 mins mileage wise and be downright downright dangerous on a wet tarmac road. I tend to stay away from cheap remolds or something that looks like it should be on a comp safari 90!!
Stating the obvious, but they are the only thing connecting 2.5+ tonnes of Land Rover to the road. All the suspension mods, sharper brakes and more power (or even as a standard car) use them to accelerate, turn and stop.
Its for that very reason I tend to pick medium to better brands of tyres. You'll often find that cheaper stuff wear quicker and in the longer run are actually less cost effective.For example, BFG's do stella mileages, but are not cheap
For most cases, Id stick to a AT tyre, and in the Rim size you are looking at, there are plenty of choices. Have a look at BF Goodrich, General Grabbers AT3's, Wrangler Duratrac, Pirelli too (these are the more costly brands). Mid range Id look at Kumho, Yokohoma, Falken, Toyo..all great tyres. Also, if you are looking into a little more off road, consider a slightly taller tyre. There are lots of posts on here about it.
Remember, a fatter tyre doesnt always give the most grip. The reason the series did so well was the fact it wasnt over tyre'd. Narrow tyres increase pressure point of the foot print, cutting through the mud to the gripper ground underneath. Fat tyres tend to sit on top of it, Ideal for sandy conditions where they sink less.
But always remember, a D3 or D4 is a fantastic machine off road with a decent set of road tyres.
Have a look at the rim size, what was factory fit, your budget and a site like camskill or black circles that will give you a indication of cost ect. Short list them and ask for opinions on here.

I prefer Duratrac's they look good and have good performance on and off road.Andrew

I think you will find very few tyres in 18 inch range will be cheap/look good and perform well.
Tbh most 4x4 and especially the land rovers will still do quite well off road on road tyres.

Thanks for the replies, I think I’ll go mid range. I’ve had Yokohama’s on a D1. I seem to remember they worked well and were reasonably priced. I will be 90% on road 10% off road. (Would love it if it was the other way around).
Definitely going for all terrain tyres.
The lanes where I live are always the last to be gritted. I also occasionally tow a trailer off-road. And I’m planning to try a bit of camping in the back hopefully off road. Although in my old age I like my creature comforts in the morning!1971 Series 2a sold (regrettably)

265/65 R18. Is my choice for combination on and off road and look the part too

But everyone has his favourites, on a forum you will never get a “commonly agreed” advice, just ventilations of opinion what everybody choose for themselves and those choices and opinions differ a lot 8)Best regards

If you are looking at Yoko's, I can certainly recommend the G015 AT. I found them

Have a look at the Avon AX7's. They're the same as the Cooper Discoverer ATT just different branded and a bit cheaper.

My D3 has 255/60/r18’s at the moment, would I need to change the rims to put on Pirelli 265/65/r18’s?1971 Series 2a sold (regrettably)
