Tyres

I have a discovery 4 with Pirelli scorpion 255/50R20. Had a sudden downpour on the motorway the other day as it aquaplaned really bad, thought I was going in the barrier! Came home via A road instead Of M20 and hitting a puddles even at low speed was scary. Checked the tread depth when I got in and fronts are 3mm, rears 4mm.
So, now I’m after new tyres. Car is used 99% on road. Was looking at Avon ZX7.
Anyone with experience of these and what are they like in snow?
Don’t get snow often but don’t want to look silly in the best4x4xfar in a little bit of snow.
On my last Discovery 1 and previous Range Rovers i has BFG All Terrain T/A’s which I loved but can’t have them on this car and don’t really want to change rims.

Sorry for the long post.

Richard
Ps. Have also been looking at GG AT3 and scorpion verde and Duratrac

I’ve been happy with my scorpion zero all season in that size.
Cheers

I used to run Scorpions, but I found they were not so good after about 5mm of tread.
Now running Pirelli Scorpion ATR, very happy with them in all respects.

Legal EU minimum of 1.6 mm is really a joke . It was developed when tyres were 175 mm wide or less.
I remember driving a company loan car , and when traversing a puddle in the road there was a thump arriving at the dry bit of road . Tyres were on 1.6 mm and it was aquaplaning . Fortunately the authority for tyre replacement was in the glove box.

Minimum in Germany and Austria in winter is 4mm. Buy second hand tyres in the UK and invariably they will have come from the Continent. In my view not worth the risk of going below 4mm in a Discovery.

I've used scorpions on my last 2 discos and have always found them to be an excellent all round tyre.

If your use is 99% on road, from personal experience I can recommend the Pirelli Scorpion Verdre All Season tyre. Thumbs Up

I have Michelin Cross Climate SUV under my truck. Great tyre, very quit, precise and light steering. And it is rated as a winter tyre!
