Found a commercial tyre repair place about 2 miles away which according to their website can fix damage even if it is the side wall. I'll phone them in the morning and see if they will fix it.

Dropped the tyre off at vulcaniser and got it back today repaired and balanced. Great job and cheap at £25 inc VAT. It was either this repair or a new tyre at £190.00  .
The company is TS Tyres in Stubbington, their website is www.ts-tyre-repairs.co.uk. They also collect from Dorset, Wiltshire, Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire and London.
