Hi Nico

I have Tyredogs, the 6wheeler set.

I've been using them for about 2 years now. Some comments that I have:
The charger cable connection keeps falling out of the Tyredog unit... OK there is battery backup, but it's a pain.
When the monitor wakes up, it can take very long before all the units synced with the monitor - batteries still fine.
My number 5 unit now reads 999 [on or off the wheel] a new one will cost R650, Bud said I must blow with air and see if it helps....
I still think the fish bait ball on the valve attracts unnecessary attention and it is a pain to loosen the locknuts to let air out or pump [personal dislike]

It is still a plus though when changing flat tyres - the unit goes to the new spare in place.

Cheers

One of the vehicles in our group to Nam/Bots recently lost two tyres (and sustained some damage to the vehicle) on the gravel roads. Both occasions happened very quickly and seems to be rapid deflation - not blow outs.

I just wonder how quickly the monitor (and driver) will react on rapid deflation to prevent damage Question

Part of my thinking ? BUT ....

When I tow and we drive more than 1 vehicle I stop every 100km at least to check the trailer etc... this is on gravel in Nam as the stones etc and offroad-caravan-trailer is not always the best of friends Shocked

So I also wonder if the tyre monitors is really worthwhile - only thing is if there is 1 warning of slow leak with MT/R 255/55/19 then the system paid for itself if the tyre can be saved Very Happy so I presume in all the future km I intend to travel I should just get the monitor

NOW - The best out there ???

Nico

I have no doubt if I should use them or not. It saved me a Caravan tyre [and maybe a misshap of greater nature perhaps]. I still stop every 200Km and do the touch test on all tyres and hubs, old habbits don't die easy Yawn

Heinie, what did you find.....

Hi Nico

I gave up with tyredog after my third replacement went faulty. The sensors are prone to breaking and they do not like excessive vibration . Pity , because otherwise it is a very nice unit and the fact that the sensors sit on the valve makes it easy to swop between tyres and even cars .

I have gone back to the digityre http://www.digitire.co.za/TPMS.php which was bullet proof on my defender for 3 years . The drawback is that the sender sits inside the rim so it needs to be done by a fitment centre .

Tx Heine ...

I was ready to click the buy button on Tyredog - NOT anymore

Tx
I was worried but also the valve thing looks easy Very Happy but if it doesn't work for our purpose then Evil or Very Mad

So will check-out the digityre one

I see Gadgets and Things in PTA have a programmable system (up to 27 tyres). Both temperature and pressure are monitored and data is displayed on a LCD monitor.

I will try to get more info and possibly test the system during my trip to Bots.

I think I saw the same unit at the Gauteng Motorshow on Saturday - unfortunately the sensors look exactly the same as the tyredog ones - ie, they will fall apart on washboard roads (at least that was my experience). Cheap though - R1500 for the unit plus 6 sensors. New sensors freely available at R500 each.
Might be worth a try - for the same price as the dog you can buy a whole set of extra sensors

I purchased the AVE system today (from Gadgets and things) and will have it fitted on Saturday. The sensors are fitted inside the rims and looks rather sturdy. The display is a colour LCD that indicates both pressure and temperature. The vehicles' battery is also monitored via the system.
